Authenticity and consistency are indeed key elements, yet pinpointing what that means can be challenging for the younger generations defining their careers. After 30 years, I'm able to review an array of past experiences and know myself. If you're among the millenials and GenZs, sincerely reflect on your values (and I hope respecting your human diginity and the dignity of others is high on your list), write them out, and tape a print out on the wall in front of your workspace. Low tech, yes, but valuable. For the next two weeks, challenge yourself; weigh your posts and comments against your print out each and every time. Are you consistently representing the good for which you've been made to bring into the world?

Of course, a thoughtful conversation can have a wide range of views in it. If you want to engage in conversation with your fans and followers, by all means do it. Just be aware of the line between friendly debate and trolling. If you own a business that gets online reviews, you’ll establish credibility by responding to negative reviews in a calm, open way, whether you agree with the feedback or not.

Your content and your comments on other people’s content do demonstrate your subject matter knowledge and communication skills, but I don’t want you to run around LinkedIn or any other platform posting comments to show the world how knowledgeable you are. When you post your original content or share someone else’s content you are starting or amplifying a conversation. When you comment on someone else’s posted content you are joining an existing conversation. That’s an important distinction. People forget that their LinkedIn comments are visible on their profile. That’s a shame, because they could hurt their online reputation by posting rude, defamatory or just pointless comments.
