A top level outline of the plot helps in getting started, as well as in keeping a track of the lot progress. There are said to be 2 kinds of story writers - Plotters & Pantser. While Plotters make sure to plan each turn of the plot but even Pantsers have a broad outline of the plot. They feed in the details as they progress. So yes outline is key.

If you write in Scrivener, make a character bible out of its “Character Sketches” template: • Customize the default template, and create different templates for main characters vs. side characters. • Highlight and color code sections for easy visual reference. Add images to each sketch to bring characters to life. • Hyperlink sketches to their scenes, locations, and relationships to weave a tight web that’s easy to navigate. • Use metadata to track roles (protagonist, antagonist, etc.) and sort characters. • Characters evolve, and so should their sketches. Keeping a timeline informs when to incorporate clues and twists, while referring to your character bible enables you to see how much information needs to be revealed to your audience.

There's a reason why writers love sticky notes! Use them to track plot points, character arcs, or even foreshadowing elements. Sticking them on a bulletin board or wall allows you to visualize the bigger picture and identify areas that might need revision.

I don't write fiction or tend to tell very long stories, but I find this step is essential for most people telling short business stories: Track the change in your main character. Here's what I mean: - If it's a good story, there will be some element of change - The character will become a different person, or at the very least they have learned or realised something they didn't before With that in mind, you need to do two things: 1. Is it obvious at the end of the story that the change has happened? 2. Is there evidence early in the story that they were different (or didn't know what they learned by the end)? If you don't review and revise that, your story can feel pointless (no change) or forced (no clear journey).

I have one short piece of advice for you. Once you finish writing your text, congratulate yourself, then put it in a drawer. Not on top of your desk, but in the drawer. Now, go to sleep. Wake up the next morning and read it with cold eyes. Never submit immediately.
