How do you hook your podcast listeners in the first 30 seconds?

Kick off with a bang like "Did you know cats secretly run the internet?" Cue theme music that doesn't sound like you stole it from a shopping mall control room. Launch into your intro with intention and intrigue; "You're about to learn why socks disappear in the dryer!" Give them a teaser that's juicier than a 90s R&B star's arse, "You'll get instantly richer by learning the psychology behind collecting fridge magnets." Connect instantly by asking, "Ever wonder if fish get thirsty?" Pack this all into the first 30 seconds like you're Taylor's hot mum trying to squeeze back into your favourite jeans from high school.

You need to spark an interest from the start - a statement, question, disruptive position which will entice not just your current listeners but also new listeners to engage with your content. Just ensure that your hook aligns with your content, I know it sounds obvious, but I have seen hooks used to grab attention - but in no way align with the recording. The reality is that it is the recording which will generate the value - not the hook.

I start all my podcasts with a 15-second hook (excerpt) from the interview itself; then the music starts, then the introduction, then the actual interview. I find this formula to work really well.

Anything which you think can be relevant for the audience will hook them to your podcast. Also voice modulation techniques are immensely helpful to keep the audience hooked to your content.

I have an interview podcast, and my approach has always been the same: I introduce myself and the guest very quickly, and then I say the strangest thing I have found out about the guest from my research. That might be something they did, something they said, or maybe some way that I relate to them that might be funny. That achieves a couple of things: - It almost always makes the guest laugh and starts the conversation at a friendlier place - It gives the listeners a clear idea of what they can expect from the rest of the conversation As an added bonus, it also tells the guest I've done my research which, if nothing else, shows that I respect their time and I am taking it seriously.

Podcasting is a long game. My best advice is to just start, and keep perfecting your show as you go. If you listen to any long-running podcasts, you'll know, that many continue to adapt and evolve their format and style over the years as tastes change, they attract their loyal audience and receive feedback, and find their flow.

Practice and accept the process of trail and error. Research the podcast tiles / intros - see which you like. Look at your competition for ideas. Engage with a podcast host that you admire and get their advice also!

What draws people in your listen? There isn't any one answer really, the sense os anticipation really helps and the passion and excitement you can convey is powerful. Bavk to the hook, I haven't got a podcast but have monthly events and I think the principle is the same. So last month I was talking about goals and intentions we set at the start of the new year. It was the subtitle that drew people in and I found myself and my guests repeating and borrowing the phrase in their stories and the hook is 'nourishing beyond' It has an appeal.
