How do you handle multiple character perspectives and growth in a single story?

I'll explain how to do this with a short film story. When you want to show different characters changing and growing in one story without messing up the main plot, you need to make sure each character's development fits with the main story. Give each character their own moments to show how they change (Character development), like short scenes or important talks that tell about their journey. Put these moments into the main story smoothly, so they add to the whole story without making the main idea less important. This way, you can make the plot more interesting with different characters growing, without losing focus on the main story.

The first step is deciding which point of view (POV) will best serve your story. You have a few options: First Person: Offers intimacy and immediate connection to the character's thoughts and feelings. When using multiple first-person perspectives, clearly distinguish between different characters' chapters or sections. Third Person Limited: Allows for closeness with a bit more flexibility than first person. You can switch between characters, focusing on one at a time while still maintaining some narrative distance. Third Person Omniscient: Provides an all-seeing, all-knowing narrator who can delve into the thoughts and feelings of multiple characters within the same scene. This is great for connecting threads but requires skill.

In most storytelling for professional purposes (and particularly social media), the first person point of view makes the most sense for anecdotes - while storytelling designed to really speak to the reader is typically most powerful in the second-person. Remember that the foundational point of view of your story doesn't actually limit you to a single perspective, though - it just means you need to make sure that the multiple perspectives you do share adhere to the guidelines for your chosen POV. For instance, you can describe your first-person assumptions about someone else's perspective when using first-person POV - just remember that you need to stay true to the characteristics of that first-person character when you do.

Consider omniscience. Although it's generally (and rightly) regarded as more of a literary approach--see Richard Russo's wonderful essay "In Defense of Omniscience"--you can get a lot of mileage out of not limiting yourself to strict 1st-, 2nd-, or 3rd-person narration.

Establishing distinct characteristics for each of your characters, early on, in your story is beneficial. This is because the distinct characteristics will help prevent your audience from being confused when you choose to shift perspectives periodically throughout your story.

Create Distinct Voices. Each character needs a unique voice. Spend time developing distinct personalities, speech patterns, and perspectives for each character. This helps in making them easily recognizable and relatable for the readers.

Defining the characteristics of a character requires mentally testing them in various situations, even those that will not be part of your story. This should be done exhaustively until the character becomes almost autonomous. This way, you will avoid inconsistencies. Identify the characters with animals and brands, music, and flavors. The more three-dimensional, the more believable and possible they will be

Outline Character Arcs. Mapping out character arcs is essential. Outline where each character starts, their journey, and how they evolve. This ensures that their growth is coherent and meaningful, allowing you to weave their development seamlessly into the story.

When you're developing a character arc in professional storytelling, you're really just planning for the transformation you'd like to share with your audience. Ask yourself the following questions to do this successfully: - Where is the main character at (often yourself) where the story begins? - What journey does the story take them on? - How do they emerge different by the end of the story? Link this to a transformation your ideal client/brand audience can actually empathise with and recognise themselves within, and you're golden.

Narrative arcs, even when interconnected with the main storyline, can almost be considered separate stories. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that each character needs to have an arc. Arcs can be collective, and the same character can be part of multiple arcs. Try to bring the resolution of two or more arcs together in a single scene. That is mastery.

Life is complicated. And while business storytelling needs to be super clear to your ideal audience, that doesn't mean your stories need to be shallow or overly simplistic. (Which is often the case with a single, simplified perspective). By including multiple perspectives from the story you'd like to share (whether imagined or actual), you're automatically making your story more balanced, realistic, and - ultimately - memorable.

Think of your story as a group project. Each character has a part to play, and it is essential to give each one their time to shine. Planning your story this way ensures everyone is included and adds something valuable. This keeps your story balanced and engaging for your readers.

Moreover, stick to the theme of the storyline and ensure you focus on leaving a deep impression on the minds of the reader.
