I think of training as in programs with multiple courses, activities and content. If the skills assessment is evolving, build smaller pieces quickly and test them rapidly. Make changes to adjust to the needs of the learners.

Consider that each learner has their own objectives and reasons for being in a course. Each one listens to the same radio station “WIIFM” — What’s In It For Me. Understanding each learners goals and perspectives can help you tailor conversations and discuss concepts in terms of what they care about learning. I also recommend having learners share their own case studies and bringing in outside news stories and case studies that are topical and relatable. This can be more work but leads to higher satisfaction and better engagement.

As long as they can demonstrate any degree of competence, and as long as no major disruption occurs on the day-to-day operations, or causes a negative impact on the bottom line, they’re happy.
