How do you calculate degrees of freedom in ANOVA?

ANOVA stands for Analysis of Variance. It's a statistical method used to analyze the differences among group means in a sample. ANOVA assesses whether the means of two or more groups are statistically different from each other by examining the variance within and between groups. types of ANOVA One-Way ANOVA: It compares the means of three or more independent groups to determine if at least one group is significantly different. Two-Way ANOVA: It extends the one-way ANOVA by analyzing the influence of two categorical independent variables (factors) on one dependent variable. In Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), degrees of freedom (DF) assess variability within and between groups. For one-way ANOVA: DF between = Number of groups - 1 (measures variation between group means). But still, if you know the mean and choose 9 values then the 10th value will depend on the mean value with 100% surety. You can't choose sample values if you don't have the value of the mean but some value of the mean does exist.

Degrees of freedom depend on the types of factors introduced into the ANOVA model. The number of df is not calculated in the same way for crossed and nested factors. Say that there are two factors in the ANOVA model A and B nested in A. A has (a-1) df B has a(b-1) df This is the simplest example of a nested design. The underlying data structure or experimental design (or lack of) must be accounted for. Failure to do so is such a common mistake. Incorrect ANOVA model specification may lead to inaccurate F statistics and corresponding p-values, therefore incorrect inferences. One must determine whether factors are fully crossed, nested? Are there blocking structures, covariates to account for? Was the experiment fully randomized or were there constraints resulting in split-plot, split-block designs with several error terms. Actually, in small-sample repeated-observation studies determining the *right* number of degrees of freedom is complex to avoid bias. Traditionally we have the residual Df (lowered by the number of estimated parameters, including covariance structure), and between-within. But the most useful are the Satterthwaite(-Welch) and Kenward-Roger methods (along with variance-covariance estimator).
