How do you build trust and rapport among your collaborators?

In my experience, Being open for communication, accepting different point of views, learning from each other's strengths & experiences are the key to building trust & rapport. Its like playing a relay race: You do your best when the baton is in your hands and as your handover the baton to your partner, you trust them to do the best too.

a) In my experience, being authentic and transparent is key to building trust and rapport with employees, as it promotes an open and honest working environment. b) For example, I share relevant information and am clear about challenges and expectations, which helps create a foundation of mutual trust. c) Admitting mistakes and being genuine in daily interactions reinforces credibility and encourages others to do the same, strengthening the relationship of trust.

We need to be brave enough to show our true selves to our team members. That will definitely make us vulnerable but it is worthwhile. Like the Japanese art of Kintsugi, our imperfections can eventually turn into our best traits. We are not superheroes, we all make mistakes and that’s ok, as long as we learn from them. Trust can only be built when we are authentic, and when we embrace diversity and authenticity in our team members.

When we are authentically ourselves, this creates psychological safety for others to do the same. We all have areas to improve, with areas we excel at. When we focus on what we have in common equal to our differences, we will create a collaboration.

Dropping our 'masks' and be our authentic self is an important ingredient in fostering trust and building rapport. However, this requires for people to feel safe, otherwise it is unlikely that they will drop their guard. As always, leaders need to lead by example, be courageous, and take the steps to establish vulnerability-based trust. When leaders go first, it invites others to do follow. Be genuinely interested in each others stories, understand the strenghts and weaknesses, and how people like to work. This nurtures mutual awareness for how to interact more effectively. Leaders have the responsibility to create the spaces and regular opportunities to build trust and rapport, because it takes time and won't happen overnight.

Regular and effective communication is vital for building trust and rapport among collaborators, crucial in successful project management and corporate teamwork. I've noticed that communication skills can be innate for some personalities, while others may need training. Some individuals might need to overcome extreme quietness and enhance expression, while others could benefit from learning to talk less and provide opportunities for others to speak. Effective communication always begins with active listening, progressing to systemic communication for creative problem-solving and efficient project management.

Effective communication requires clarity and goes in two directions. To build trust and rapport, communication is about listening, asking questions, and inviting people's ideas, opinions, and concerns. If people feel heard and valued, it creates a good foundation for trust. When transmitting messages, to be effective it must be authentic and clear, otherwise the frequent communication can backfire, as it will be perceived as hollow words. And while professionalism is important, it should not be void of personal touches as effectiveness will suffer if the communication is preceived as anonymous and inpersonal. The best communication is concise, authentic, and relatable.

To communicate effectively, there are two key things - Open and Honest Communication and Active Listening. Foster a culture of transparency by encouraging open, honest, and respectful communication. Share information and updates regularly and LISTEN actively to your collaborators' concerns and ideas. Many a time, we communicate but fail to listen.

I believe that building trust and rapport among collaborators is crucial for a successful development culture organization. Frequent and effective communication are essential to achieving this. I have found that the ability to appreciate and recognize others originates from the development of inner emotional security, eradicating apprehensions related to competition. Genuine inner security is achieved by fostering self-efficacy, cultivating a belief in effectively navigating challenges, and nurturing self-esteem through positive self-appraisal. Furthermore, fostering self-love and aligning with personal values significantly contributes to the cultivation of resilient inner security. This multifaceted approach serves as the foundational cornerstone for establishing meaningful connections and interactions with others.

Appreciation and gratitude are not nearly used enough to nurture trust, rapport and mattering in teams. It’s less about the big celebrations for certain achievements, and more about the small gestures and habits, to show genuine appreciation for other people’s contributions. However, those should not be limited to the work people do, but also address the inherent qualities of people and express gratitude for having them in your team and for who they are. Practice constructive feedback and support people in their growth, acknowledge their strengths and help them use them as much as possible to their and the companies advantage.

Recognizing employees, either by individuals or organizations, fosters trust and reinforces the belief that their work is valued and contributes to the organization's success. This is especially true when recognition programs align with the company's core values. These programs not only celebrate individual achievements but also reinforce the company culture. By recognizing employees who embody the organization's core values, you demonstrate their importance and instill a sense of belonging. Recognition doesn't require significant financial investment. What truly matters is the impact it has on employees – a sense of appreciation, belonging, and the knowledge that their hard work is valued.

Research has shown that more diverse teams are more creative, perform better, and deliver better results. It should therefore be in any organization's interest to foster a respectful culture that is open and welcomes diversity in all shapes and forms. However, that may not be enought to build deep trust and rapport in diverse teams. For this to truly land, diversity should be observable across all levels of the organization, including top leadership.

Several studies from Stanford University, Harvard University, and the McKinsey Institute show that diverse work teams (in terms of gender, race, and ethnicity) or those with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion are more likely to share ideas, participate in decision-making making, and innovative than non-diverse companies. This translates to the ability to attract and retain talented employees and potential customers. In short, respecting diversity and differences is essential to building trust within an organization. This trust fosters participation and engagement, promotes innovation and creativity, and enhances corporate reputation and image, leading to a competitive advantage and long-term success.

Be Approachable and Available in addition to being reliable and accountable. Make yourself accessible to your collaborators. Being approachable and available for questions, discussions, and feedback can help build rapport and trust, quicker. Be transparent about decisions by sharing the reasoning behind decisions, especially when they impact your collaborators. This shows that you respect their input and opinions.

Leading by example is important here. As a leader or team member, model trustworthy behavior by being reliable, honest, and transparent. Follow through on commitments, share information openly, and admit mistakes when they occur. When others see you as trustworthy, it sets a positive example for the team.

Trust is the very foundation for building rapport and trust requires the demonstration of reliability by following through on commitments. When there is trust and psychological safety, people can also hold each other accountable on those commitments. When issues and conflicts arise, how leaders respond sets the tone for the whole team. Being respectful, vulnerable, and a good listener helps to find resolution and to contribute and collaboration to the pursuit of solutions. If the environment in teams allows for healthy conflict, which always focuses on the matter and never becomes personal, committing and holding each other accountable becomes much easier.

Engage in enjoyable social interactions, recognizing that this might be effortless for extroverts but challenging for introverts. Being aware of your social orientation preferences enhances emotional intelligence, fostering trust, support, and satisfaction in collaborative endeavors.

As the leader of the internal communications team, I am sought out by employees in the company who need help solving problems, advice, or a confidence boost. In this vein, I also prioritize inviting the IC team to participate in fun activities outside the company. I've found that these informal meetings foster much more trust between people through shared experiences that aren't bound by company regulations. While this is important, however, those at higher leadership levels (managers, C-level) often don't feel this as acutely. There are many reasons: level gap, generation-age gap, or unresolved conflicts at work...

Winning over individuals initially alienated involves acknowledging their experiences and humbly inviting them to contribute to corporate teamwork. When faced with team members lacking trust in leadership, the impact of sacrificial acts becomes significant. Observing both verbal and behavioral consistency, such acts, especially when directed towards them, serve to empower, inspire, and fully solicit their support and involvement in the collaborative process.

Gosto muito da sistematização do Stephen Covey sobre confiança, no seu livro "The Speed of Trust". A confiança se baseia em 4 pilares: - Integridade: agir com honestidade e justiça - Intenção: ser transparente e se relacionar com intenção positiva - Conhecimento: saber o que você faz e adquirir experiência - Resultados: ter um histórico com boa reputação e credibilidade Os dois primeiros são premissas numa equipe e devem ser tratados como tal. Ou as pessoas agem dessa maneira, ou não deveriam estar na equipe. Não tem meio termo. Os dois últimos são possíveis de se desenvolver, o importante é que as pessoas da equipe estejam ativamente buscando melhorar nesses campos. Juntando pessoas assim numa equipe, a confiança se construirá.

Na minha experiência existem 3 elementos que são essenciais para construção de confiança entre equipes: 1 Construção de vínculo (Bolwby como referência). Em um time o vínculo é o que nos permite ter espaço de segurança psicológica para falar o que precisa ser dito sem medo do que pode gerar. 2 - Objetivo em comum (ou visão compartilhada) As pessoas precisam saber para onde estão indo, os problemas a serem resolvidos precisam ser os mesmos de todo o time para criar senso de pertencimento. 3 - Clareza de papel Alinhamento de expectativa sobre o que se espera do time e também o que o time espera da liderança é fundamental para a construção de bons acordos considerando as necessidades das pessoas envolvidas.
