You need to determine if the potential 'collaborators' know how to collaborate and how to work as a team. Collaboration requires teamwork, regardless of your goals. Once you find those who can collaborate, you can collectively define goals and expectations.

One of the first questions - probably the most important one - to ask is: Should I be attempting to collaborate or partner? Think - What is the benefit? Can I/we achieve more through collaboration, than we could on my/our own? What can I/we learn through collaboration? Partnering and collaboration takes work, effort, commitment, time, potentially costs. The first step in the journey is weighing up whether it is a journey you should undertake. From there, SMART goals, definitive goals/targets/outcomes, realistic expectations. Make sure you know what you want to achieve.

If the goal is not clear, or if you are not clear about your short-comings or the aspect on which you need collaboration, then you risk negatively affecting your goal. By doing this 1st, one can best determine which students should be grouped. For ex, if I assign student-choice MI tasks & some require partners while others are individualized, the teacher should be ready to quickly determine if Megan S., Meghan P., & Meagan T.’s selected assignment & grouping are the best choice for each of the girls or if a different MI assignment would best suit each. Additionally, having a solid method for selecting/assigning groups can come in handy during a parent conference. Consistent procedures save!! ☺️
