How do you assess safety culture for improvement?

In the unwavering commitment to prioritize workplace safety, the imperative task of evaluating and enhancing safety culture takes center stage. Within any organizational context, the assessment of safety culture typically revolves around three primary pillars: first, gauging the sentiments of individuals toward their working environment; second, scrutinizing their behaviors concerning safety practices; and third, analyzing the strategic actions undertaken by senior management to exemplify their dedication to fostering a culture of safety. To further assess, this, a multifaceted approach, integrating methods like focus groups, observations, audits, and assessments may be deployed.

For me Safety Culture comes from the bottom up. It is the people on the front line that drive a safety culture. If it comes from the top it is safety management or safety leadership; however, those at the top must lead by example when it comes to safety.

Safety culture is a combination of values, standards, and norms that promote a self-disciplined approach to safety. To assess safety culture, you can: Conduct a survey among employees, managers, and other stakeholders. The survey can gather feedback on aspects of safety culture, such as leadership, communication, training, participation, accountability, and trust. Focus on following areas: Perception of health and safety Leadership and management commitment Employee involvement Communication Training and education Incident reporting and investigation Accountability Continuous improvement Compare your safety performance to industry benchmarks. You can look at data on injury rates, lost work days, and other safety indicators.

A safety culture is an attitude, rather than a set of rules or procedures; because it a habit as well as a mind set. To assess a safety culture in an organization, you need to look at the overall behaviors of workers towards safety. Also examine the Safety Cycle of the organization; the incident/accident trends, because wherever there is an effective safety culture, the safety cycle tends to be even out, if not end completely. Other areas of assessing a safety culture is by *examining the training program *scrutinize the mechanism for improving safety ideology in workers. *Examine the organization's communication system *how simple & understandable are the job procedures. *Are there quality and standardized tools for workers to use

The first stage is for senior management to make commitments to the company and all of its employees. Such responsibilities must be established on the company's interests in health, safety, and the environment. A mechanism in place for creating or influencing employees' awareness of health, safety, and environmental considerations before beginning any task.  All individuals connected to the organization is required to consider safety considerations when performing day-to-day tasks. The Management is encouraging employees to address workplace health and safety in public or on any other platform for the benefit of the organization.

Safety culture surveys are valuable tools for assessing and improving safety culture in the workplace. In fact, my company is currently in the middle of it's annual survey. One important factor not mentioned is to ensure that surveys are anonymous and confidential to encourage open and honest responses from employees. This anonymity promotes a more genuine reflection of the safety culture within the organization. Safety culture surveys also need to provide actionable insights for continuous improvement, ultimately fostering a safer workplace environment. Leadership commitment to improving safety culture is crucial. Leaders should actively participate in survey-related activities and lead by example to inspire employees at all levels.

Combining surveys with on-the-ground observation and interviews provides a holistic view of safety culture, facilitating targeted improvements where needed. It's about not just hearing what people say but also seeing what they do, and this approach aligns with my belief in the importance of practical, hands-on solutions in the pursuit of a safer workplace

Reviewing documents and records as a method to assess safety culture is a prudent approach. It aligns with the idea that concrete data often holds the key to understanding the true state of safety within an organization. These records are like historical markers that offer insights into the organization's safety journey. When reviewed alongside best practices and industry standards, they can reveal gaps or areas that require attention.

Strengths are the pillars of success in safety culture. They are the elements that should be celebrated and reinforced, as they contribute to positive safety outcomes. Gaps, on the other hand, represent opportunities for growth. They pinpoint areas where interventions and changes are needed to align with safety goals. Using frameworks like SWOT analysis ensures a structured approach to identifying these gaps, making it easier to prioritize and address them. Involving employees, managers, and stakeholders in this process fosters a sense of ownership and collaboration. Their perspectives can offer valuable context and practical insights, enriching the roadmap for cultivating a safer and more resilient workplace.

The way to create a safety culture is to mobilize all people. This requires actions that will impact the community. You can organize an Occupational Safety Exhibition and show correct and incorrect practices in this exhibition. It is an incredibly effective work. I tried it and saw the effect! You can form a marching band. You can celebrate the number of accident-free days together with the entire business! When you can mobilize groups, culture begins to form!

Assessing safety culture for improvement requires a holistic approach that hinges on understanding the perspective of workers on the frontlines. To truly evaluate safety culture, you must engage with the individuals who directly contribute to it. This means actively seeking input from employees at all levels, from the field to the CEO's office. This gives you a insight into the prevailing attitudes towards safety within your organization. It's important to observe daily routines and communication patterns within the workplace. Building a culture of safety requires involvement in the day-today work being performed, seeing at eye-level what workers are doing and how they're implementing the HSMS program into their daily working lives.

Based on IOSH and what I've learned from years ago, simple: Leadership: Make sure leaders care about safety. Rules and Training: Have clear safety rules and training. Employee Training: Train employees for safety. Report Issues: Encourage reporting of problems. Investigate Incidents: Look into accidents carefully. Measure Safety: Keep track of safety data. Involve Employees: Include employees in safety. Clear Communication: Share safety info clearly. Assess Attitudes: Understand staff's safety views. Continuous Improvement: Keep working on safety.

Motivation. Consider rewards for best safety performance. The criteria should be the "following safety measures" and not "not getting hurt" Give awards to every participant. Safety should always be a win-win situation.

It may be worth questioning whether we're discussing 'safety culture' or just 'culture' in general? Sometimes, adding the word 'safety' can make the topic seem like a separate issue, possibly detaching it from the broader organisational culture. By integrating safety into the general culture, it becomes less of a specialised subject and more of a natural, ongoing conversation. This makes it easier for everyone to engage with safety, as it's woven into the daily fabric of work life. Essentially, a strong general culture will uphold safety as one of its pillars, making the workplace naturally safer and more aligned with all other organisational values.
