How can you use hybrid project management methods to improve your project outcomes?

Hybrid project management integrates the strengths of traditional Waterfall methods and agile practices, offering a balanced approach that enhances project outcomes. It combines structured planning and control from Waterfall with Agile's adaptability and iterative cycles, enabling teams to adjust to changes swiftly while maintaining clear goals and timelines. This approach fosters effective team communication and collaboration, leveraging iterative progress checks alongside structured phases to mitigate risks early. By tailoring methodologies to project-specific needs, hybrid management ensures projects are completed efficiently, on time, and within budget, delivering successful outcomes amidst dynamic business environments.

Implementing a hybrid project management methodology is favorable when projects demand both adaptability and structured planning, such as in complex, long-term endeavors with changing requirements. It's suitable when teams possess expertise in both Agile and traditional methods. However, it's less favorable for smaller, straightforward projects with clear requirements, where using a single methodology might be more efficient. If teams lack familiarity with both approaches or if there's resistance to change, a hybrid approach might not be advisable.

I feel any project management methodology is purely industry best practices. "Industry" being the key word. I think most organizations feel because it's a process you have to go by the book. I think that is failure #1. These processes/methodologies should be tailored to what best fits in the planning and execution of the organization's strategic roadmap. More importantly, defined during the intake process with key consideration of downstream processes potentially impacting it's objectives.

Getting clarity on the goals, aligning the project strategically and a clear requirements gathering can help us decide the project approach. With the requirements and the scope of delivery we can assess the complexity of the project, the timelines the project is expected to deliver in. If the requirements are changing frequently then we can focus on using hybrid or agile. If the requirements are very clear and less changes expected then we can go for waterfall approach.

In my opinion, projects with clearly defined requirements and little potential for change are best suited for Waterfall lifecycle model. The project is divided into distinct phases such as planning, design, development, testing and deployment when employing the Waterfall. Before moving on to the next phase, there is short room for changes or modifications. Scrum is an agile framework built on iterative development. The project is divided into brief development cycles known as sprints, each of which results in the delivery of a functional product increment. Scrum places a strong emphasis on adaptability and flexibility and adjustments to be made throughout the project. This approach works best for projects with ambiguous or changing needs

Hybrid project management is a good approach, however not all projects can be driven using the hybrid project model, for example, most of the infrastructure projects goes best with the waterfall model. All the phases are dependent and needs to be executed in linear method. Build can only be initiated after the procurement is completed and testing can only be done once the build is completed. Agile methodology can be used more in application development types of projects where the requirements may keep changing, stakeholder needs a view on the product more often.

A commonly used way for hybrid approaches is to use Waterfall for the planning and design phases and Scrum for the development and test phases. However, this can result in unclear project direction, so be aware of difficulties.
