As a Purchasing Manager in the Construction Industry, we have a lot of timber-based packaging materials. We eliminated this also by indicating our packaging conditions during the RFQ process. This stance significantly reduced timber waste. The other thing we looked at was optimizing shipments by reducing multi-part shipments, and order consolidation.

Here is what i have done to reduce single-use plastic in logistics and transportation. Instead of using single-use plastic void fillers in cartons, we use machine to shred our returned cartons and use that as void filler. Instead of shrink wrapping product boxes, we worked with suppliers and designed boxes in a way that they don't need plastic security seals or wrapping. Instead of using single-use plastic shipping bags we use eco friendly shipping bags options. Initially this feels like an extra cost to business but if marketed properly, these initiatives can bring in revenue from customers who support brands investing in sustainability.

In my perspective, local sourcing, supplier integration, technologic research, waste hierarchy, and lastly process reengineering will also reduce waste.
