How can you market yourself as a sustainability consultant?

Consultant must able to apply any of sustainability framework to different industries. It must not be only copy paste because every industries have different sustainability impacts.

If my experience working in the sustainability space has taught me anything, it is that we need a wide variety of skills to find solutions for the most pressing problems of our times. I've had the privilege of working alongside lawyers, policy experts, accountants, and engineers, and each individual brings a very unique perspective. It is important for a sustainability consultant to leverage the niche skills they bring to the table and continue to develop them (for instance, engineers might excel in quantifying environmental impacts, while policy experts might find it easier to stay updated on climate regulations and laws). Equally important is the ability to translate your unique area of expertise to others you work with.

There are two tacks you can take here, depending on who or what kind of work you are marketing yourself to: 1- narrow your focus and showcase a depth of experience in a specific sustainability-related niche 2- widen your focus to show your breadth of experience and understanding across the broader sustainability field That said, I would encourage you to approach this from both angles as they both add to your "selling" points and can help you bridge seemingly unconnected experiences into your "why!"

Escribí más de 72 articulos dirigidos hacia la sostentabilidad corporativa a través de la innovación en la fabricas (Que como dice la cadena de valor de Porter, hay que poner la plata en lo que el cliente valora). En una empresa el cliente valora el producto, que se hace en las fabricas... por lo cual el objetivo primario es evolucionar las plantas para que esté conectadas con la casa matríz, se pueda integrar para analizarla con la I.A. y ver nuevas maneras en ser sustentable a través de la innovación.} Me especifico en: Apoyar las empresas a crear un modelo de Madurez Digital holístico. Innovaciones sustentables en las plantas Calculo y potenciales mejoras en relación a la sustentabilidad y continuidad de negocios de las fabricas.

Networking is absolutely essential in building a successful career in sustainability consulting. The important thing is to do it right: In a good network, I give and take. In concrete terms, this means recommending others, for example, then I am more likely to be recommended myself.

In my - still relatively young- experience, being able to leverage a network that you’ve built from genuine interest and aspirations will help you think outside the box and find innovative solutions to professional challenges and obstacles one might encounter. Being able to reach out to someone, even for a quick chat, shouldn’t be taken for granted as it’s often, if not always, the start of great opportunities. Plus, the key to sustainable development is to join forces and build partnerships, and for that we all need to join our networks.

Networking is essential for consultant in any field, and networking in sustainability provides many opportunities for interesting contacts as people in the business come from many different fields.

La utilización de redes sociales es clave, en especial Linkedin. Tener como contactos a las personas correctas, desarrollar networking, generar contenido de calidad y que sea un aporte a tu propuesta de valor es clave para definir una marca personal fuerte y consistente.

Primeramente identificar y definir cual es tu especialidad, que es lo que te hace único y diferente con respecto a los demás, en temas de sustentabilidad. Crear el portafolio de servicios y dar a conocer por diferentes medio, networking, redes sociales, etc.

In my opinion, the best way to develop your brand is to be a strong voice of advocacy for the cause of sustainability itself, rather than promoting yourself as an individual expert on the topic. One can certainly use the multitude of social media platforms to continue the advocacy for the cause - make it real by bringing the conversation into boardrooms where you belong, into conference halls where experts debate, public forums where officials and policy-makers can listen, and finally homes where friends and family gather to spend evenings.

Importante una marca reputada, y en ese sentido, combinar experiencia privada (colaboraciones con la industria, empresas, instituciones privada de prestigio) con colaboraciones científicas (papers, proyectos) y de Instituciones públicas de prestigio (ONU, Comisión Europea, FAO, otras).

In my experience as a marketer who became a sustainable marketing consultant, I had to develop my personal brand to show that I had the skills in sustainability. I used LinkedIn for that, I wrote a full strategic plan where I highlighted my objective, my audience, and my content strategy. I created a new brand for me on LinkedIn. I changed my title, my url, my header banner, as well as my bio. I created harmony in my branding, using yellow, green and white in my palette. This is the branding I use in all my creatives. I also focused on creating content for my audience and solve their pains around sustainability marketing. That brand is key in how I introduce myself, it helps people understand quickly who I am and what I do for them.

One thing I have found helpful is joining a network of sustainability professionals or becoming a member of a sustainability centric professional group. These groups hold events, webinars and conferences that presents latest trends, research opportunities and best practices in sustainability. As a Consultant, such a community, gives you a good opportunity to network with diverse experts in the field of sustainability.

Knowledge is power! Never stop learning. Never stop upskilling. The more knowledge you have, the more expertise you can contribute to client projects. In an age where mis-information is so easily accessible, it's never been more important to stay up to date with scientific knowledge in the sector. By keeping your skills up to date, you can provide more sought after knowledge to your clients.

Definitivamente esto es clave. En sostenibilidad hay que tener en cuenta varios aspectos. El primero, la transversalidad del término: habitualmente la formación se centra en un ámbito concreto y el seguir adquiriendo conocimiento del resto de áreas debe ser un must para cualquier profesional. En segundo lugar, pero igual de importante, el tsunami normativo: es evidente que, debido al desarrollo constante de legislación relacionada, la tendencia es poder posicionar las cuestiones de sostenibilidad al mismo nivel que la información financiera.

Use storytelling to connect with clients on an emotional level and showcase the positive impact of your work. Don't waste time at irrelevant gatherings. Network strategically within your target industry and build relationships with potential clients, partners, and influencers. Don't just push your services. Share valuable content through blog posts, articles, webinars, or podcasts, establishing yourself as a thought leader in your field.

Marketing yourself as a sustainability consultant requires a combination of knowledge, expertise, communication skills, ethical standards, and a tailored approach to address the unique challenges of each client. The deal-breaker is often the inability to demonstrate tangible results, lack of continuous learning, or ethical lapses, which can erode trust and hinder your success in the field.

Publish articles and books to showcase your knowledge. Tailor your services to specific industries, and leverage case studies to demonstrate your impact. Offer webinars or workshops can also attract potential clients.

Sustainability experts should have cross-cutting expertise in strategy design, corporate governance, and corporate and project management, as well as industry and sectoral focus, with applied knowledge of scientific issues in at least one area such as climate change, energy, agriculture, hydrology, among many others. To be able to understand current sustainability issues and their impacts (positive and negative) in companies, communities, regions and society at large is paramount.

Sustainability consulting is unique, navigating uncharted waters. It's crucial to align your actions with your advice; personal change is the foundation for inspiring broader transformations. Education brings responsibility. Recognizing and acting on this knowledge empowers you to influence significant institutional changes. Maintain your passion, hope, and love for your work. Sustainability is our era's most pressing challenge. Embrace the unknown, don't fear failure or mistakes. Acknowledge your knowledge limits, learn from them, and share these valuable lessons.
