How can you make your server configurations flexible and scalable?

Flexibility and scalability is important in any organization and begins with careful planning, the focus is on removing manual steps. Start with a clearly defined list of goals which will help explain your desired end state and how you get there. Which configuration management tool is best to use will come down to what your requirements are for the project and possibly your organization's personal preferences. The key is to design something that works and is idempotent, meaning consistently reproducible as it will always generate the same outcome, your desired end state. Sometimes however, one-off or ad-hoc tasks may be required for certain cases, though this should be avoided whenever possible and used only when absolutely necessary.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC) uses a principle of treating resources within your infrastructure like cattle, not pets, or said another way, destroy and redeploy. Among others, one major idea is to spend less time preventing system or configuration drift because you can always delete (destroy) and recreate (redeploy) the resource in the desired end state you want. In some popular IaC technologies like Terraform and Kubernetes, a human-readable syntax called YAML is used that serves as code, kept in version control systems, which defines the end state your infrastructure should be in. This can be as simple as spinning up a single compute instance to defining an entire complex infrastructure, though modularity is always best.

This helps track history of changes, ensures accountability, and prevents the on-call engineer(s) from getting paged unnecessarily when something inevitably goes wrong. Next, you'll want to establish a code review requirement before any changes can be merged to the main branch. Always use a separate development branch and test your changes thoroughly. Once testing passes successfully, submit a pull request (PR) for your team / senior engineers to review for acceptance. This is not only a best practice, it is also a standards requirement for compliance like SOC 2.

Careful planning and preparation can prevent several pounds of cure needed later to correct tech debt. It's also critically important to test your projects regularly to ensure the final product matches your list of goals. More advanced forms of testing can be configured using automation pipelines and virtual machines, or even containerization.
