Communicating your achievements in a confident way is often difficult for women, who aim to be humble and team focused. The consequence is, that no-one really knows what the individual achievement was. The career is based on the individual achievement. The solution to this dilemma is a fact and result based communication, using e.g.: the STAR method (situation, task, action, result). By focusing on facts and results, you reduce the perceived emotional stress. By investing 50% of your sharing effort on your own achievements and 50% on your team effort, you have a sensible balance. The key success factor is consistency! This is a continuous effort and not a once-a-year activity.
A fifth and final factor for getting promoted in consulting is to align your goals and expectations with your firm's culture and strategy. You need to understand what your firm expects from you at each level of your career, and what skills, competencies, and behaviors you need to develop and demonstrate to move up. You also need to communicate your goals and aspirations to your managers and mentors, and seek their guidance and support to achieve them. Moreover, you need to align your goals and expectations with your personal and professional values, and ensure that you enjoy and find meaning in your work. By aligning your goals and expectations, you will increase your motivation, satisfaction, and performance, which are vital for your career success.
