This can be tricky, identifying and addressing power struggles in executive teams involves observation, open dialogue, role clarification, collaboration facilitation, mediation, transparency promotion, trust-building, leadership development, goal alignment, and continuous evaluation. Not all of this can be done rapidly or at the same time. By fostering open communication, clarifying roles, promoting collaboration, mediating conflicts, and focusing on common goals, executive teams can effectively address power struggles and cultivate a cohesive and high-performing team dynamic centered on achieving organisational objectives. In my experience a refocus of why they are a team is essential and takes the focus from individual gain to the team.

I have typically found the root cause of this issue to be one of a very few things. 1. Lack of clearly defined lanes. You have leaders that lack emotional intelligence or maturity. If you have leaders that are insecure and constantly have to have the light than they will typically cause conflict in the organization.

Identifying the root cause of a power struggle in your executive team is one of the more difficult challenges you will be faced with. The first thing to look for when you notice a problem is what changes occurred recently either with personnel or responsibilities. Sometimes adding a person to a well tuned team who does not fit can be a problem. I had this experience as an executive in a senior leadership role. We hired a new executive and she interviewed really well, but once in place her true intentions came out. She was toxic and the center of many discussions. Ultimately the original group had too strong a connection which couldn’t be broken and she quit. It would have been better to discover the problem earlier.

The hard part is identifying whether there needs to be a power struggle. Somehow, we assume that the person who opens up a struggle is always the "bad" person. As I have watched several non-profits go downhill over the years, I noticed a trend of no one wanting to go against a narcissistic executive director or manager. Instead, people just quit because they didn't want to be involved in a power struggle. Other staff members even cautioned against disagreeing with the head honcho. It has to be tough to be on a board and try to decide whether to force changes.
