How can you design a hair salon space that is both functional and visually appealing?

Think with both the client and the stylist in mind. The first high end barber shop I worked at was owned by a non barber and thought entirely about the design from a customers perspective, customer experience was great, they loved it but so working in there was such a struggle because it wasn’t designed with us in mind. I worked in another shop that was set out perfectly for the barbers but lots missed on the client side. Having both in mind is vital for a successful layout!

I’m a stylist with 23 years experience. The space should be beautiful, clean, safe, and functional. There needs to be plenty of drawers set on the right hand side of the work station, free of knobs or any other obstructions cords can get caught on. There needs to be shelves so the clients can easily see the retail. The surfaces should be heat resistant. The lighting needs to be soft and natural. The work stations should not be directly under an air vent. The guests get cold, and it also affects how the hair color processes. The floor should be smooth and free from trip hazards, easy to clean. Lots of mirrors. A wax cart can be kept at the shampoo station. Fish and other animals are not allowed by law. Handicap accessible.

I believe step 1 is understanding who will be the target market of the salon. Different clients will like different aesthetics and vibe, so you can come up with a unique concept that will make you stand out from the other existing salons. The following tips should be implemented in any commercial fit-out: 1. the layout should flow effortlessly, meaning understand the order of activities and the natural flow of people who are using the space (clients and workers). 2. All tools should have a home to avoid unwanted mess. 3. Safety is priority. 4. Choosing smart finishes to promote a clean environment and lasting investment. Also, choose a space where natural light is abundant, so your client sees the correct hair colour before leaving. ;)

Decorating is important, but remember that less is more. Magazines and a lot of clutter is going to make it look messy and outdated. A salon can be anything from bohemian to country to masculine, and still be chic.

If you’ve gone through your whole branding process, key values, how you want to be perceived etc you will know exactly what these items should be. Do the thoughtful work up front to have clarity and the other steps will fall in to place naturally!

I’d like to add that different salons have different esthetics. In designing a space, you’d need to personalize it. The main things to consider is that it’s free of clutter which keeps everyone safe, it’s easy to clean, and easy to use. Items need to be nice and secure. Especially in places with earthquakes. You don’t want mirrors falling on people, cords in the walk-way, or hot curling irons kids could grab. The marquee outside needs to be interesting to bring in new business. The cleanliness of the outside of the building is equally important. Include a proper break room for staff (restrooms separate from guests, seating, tables, full sized refrigerator, microwave, water cooler, lockers). Also, the entire property should be tobacco free.

I have an idea and I hope one day to apply it . To have beauty salon in airports, alot of flights are delayed, sometimes you have to check out from the hotel early and go to the airport . What I mean we have time doing nothing , why there is not a beauty salon in the airport ?

I am in agreement with much that is said by my colleagues. My thoughts of what is most important is that whatever your space is it should be exceptionally clean first and foremost. Today’s guest/ client are more concerned with safety and a comfortable area that complies with most state regulations and especially with concern being aware that certain viruses as of lately, ( Coronavirus)that there personal health is considered while trusting the salon while receiving beauty services. They should expect only our best in this cause.
