1 Site Investigation

3 Shallow Foundations

Shallow foundations are usually cheaper and easier to construct than deep foundations, but they may not be suitable for high water table sites due to the potential for uplift, settlement, erosion, and corrosion. To overcome these problems, drainage systems such as pipes, pumps, or wells can be installed to lower the water table and reduce hydrostatic pressure on the foundation. However, this may not be feasible or effective in some cases. Additionally, waterproofing materials such as membranes, coatings, or sealants can be applied to protect the foundation from moisture and corrosion. Compaction of the soil around the foundation can also increase its density and strength while reducing permeability and compressibility. 4 Deep Foundations

Piles are long and slender columns driven, bored, or cast into the ground and can be made of concrete, steel, timber, or composite materials. They carry the load of the building by end-bearing, friction, or both and can also resist uplift and lateral forces. Caissons are large and cylindrical structures sunk into the ground and are made of concrete, steel, or masonry. They carry the load of the building by end-bearing or arching and provide stability and waterproofing for the foundation. Rafts are thick and flat slabs placed on the ground that can be made of concrete, steel, or composite materials. They carry the load of the building by distributing it over a large area of soil and reduce differential settlement and bending moment of the foundation.
