How can you build trust and communicate effectively with your startup team?

Keep it simple: set up weekly and monthly goals and measure progress around those. If the team is always meeting those goals, they weren't ambitious enough. If they're always missing them, something needs to be fixed. A sweet spot is meeting 90%-95% of the goals.

The first step towards building trust with your team is to set clear and feasible expectations. A common pitfall is overpromising and underdelivering results, which leads to damaged trust within a team. By communicating clear and achievable goals, and effectively reaching those goals, you’ll set the tone for everyone in the team to follow through with whatever they say they’re going to do. Lead by example and remember to underpromise and overdeliver.

To me, there are three things a strong startup leader must do to build trust and set the foundation for a communicative and collaborative team: 1. Identify the shortest route from your current circumstances to your goal. Do the work, do the research, come up with a strong hypothesis backed by data. 2. Articulate that route clearly, and consistently communicate how each team member's specific role feeds into the accomplishment of the larger goal. 3. Rally support for the goal with objective evidence, have a willingness to step in and work alongside the team on anything that needs help, and provide access to external and internal leaders who were successful accomplishing similar goals.

Trust and communication are the 2 important things that a startup survives on. Funds and resources is common for all, but for me it's about keeping the team aligned with my thoughts and looking forward to their needs. I believe transparency is one thing that helps you understand your team better and for them to work easily.

Be honest to your team members and yourself. This means that you should be transparent by sharing relevant information to the team members and also you should admit even your weakness and ask for help from the team. This would enhance trust as culture in your team.

For example, if the company is experiencing financial difficulties, it is important to communicate this openly so that team members understand the situation and can collaborate in finding solutions. A lot of founders need clarification on culture. They mistake ping pong tables and free lunches as pillars of a good culture and act surprised when things go south. If you want to set up a strong culture, you need to be transparent and honest with your people. A good way to prevent unhealthy conflict and drama is by encouraging healthy debate and offering rewards based on results.

I have found it a good idea to always encourage your team to voice their opinions, ideas, and concerns openly. By actively listening and responding to your team’s input, you demonstrate that their perspectives are truly valued and considered in the decision-making process. This approach builds trust and strengthens team cohesion and morale. The most valuable element for a successful start-up venture is a solid team, composed by super talented people. And I would never want it differently: I have always wanted to work with people that are better than me in at least one or more aspects of the job, while of course also being able to deliver my own and support others. Super-talents normally bring a lot to the team, but also require a lot of support and it is just a good idea to listen carefully to whatever is said, as well as to try to pick up signs and unsaids. Find ways to constantly exchange and interact in the full group, subgroups or bilaterally and act not only to solve, but to prevent issues from emerging however possible.

As the company grows, so does the need to actively build a feedback and innovation culture. In the early days, it’s easy for team members to communicate openly, but as the team grows, miscommunication issues increase mostly because feedback isn’t proactively approached. By adopting a healthy feedback culture, companies can keep the productive engine going and minimize miscommunication issues that can result in a lack of continuous improvement or innovation.

A common reason for A-players quitting your team is a lack of feedback. Here are 5 rules for giving constructive feedback: - Feedback should lead to positive action. - Constructive critical feedback is a dialogue, not a monologue. - Don’t delay it. Give feedback ASAP. - Be clear and specific by focusing on actual examples. - End on a positive note and invite feedback on yourself. Again, make sure you’ve made it clear that this is a dialogue, not a monologue.

Creating a culture where everyone can speak the truth is paramount. It's important to be respectful in all communications, but don't be afraid to have difficult conversations. Some of the best ideas originate from disagreement and discussion.

In your startup, foster a culture where every team member understands and contributes beyond their roles. Encourage open communication, ensuring everyone knows each other's tasks and the rationale behind them. Focus on creating a collaborative environment where feedback and innovative ideas are welcomed and evaluated collectively, not just by the leader but by all. Everyone has given great points so far. I want to add an often-overlooked skill - the ability to give and receive feedback. Sounds simple but believe me, this skill eludes even some industry captains. Giving feedback - learn to be honest, tactful yet direct, timeous and fair. A person should walk away understanding what the feedback was and what the next steps are. Receiving feedback - learn not to be defensive. Ask questions. Welcome feedback. Then act on it. Read up on "appreciative inquiry" when you get a chance.

Celebrating wins also means measuring from where you started to where you are today, rather than the gap between where you are today and where you want to go. While goals are hugely important, too many people get caught up in measuring the gap between where they are today and where they want to go. The issue is where you want to go always moves - and therefore you'll never ultimately get there. Rather, measure from where you started to where you are - that will continue to build self-confidence not only in yourself but in your team. Continue to set goals, just remember to measure your gains!

Most teams don’t know how they’re performing. It’s like driving without a dashboard. Here’s what you can do to simplify your progress: - Track progress against your top 3 goals - Make it accessible to everyone - Use 1x1 meetings to track individual progress - Coach & help remove blockers - Celebrate wins & give praise for progress Your team needs to know how they’re doing at all times. You can’t level up if you can’t measure your progress.

In my experience, space for your team is so important, and also crucial to make sure everyone uses it. It happened to me before that I implemented some tool and people didn't use it or just did the bare minimum so in order to avoid this to happen, while implementing a new tool try to get feedback and do it not at once so that giving a chance for everyone to see the value in this move.

Culture isn't what you do when things are going well. Culture is what guides your behavior when the ---- hits the wall. Keep that in mind when you sit down to write out your cultural values. Ask yourself how will this value help us make decisions when dealing with employee issues (performance, promotions, conflicts, etc.) product decisions (roadmap prioritization, tech debt vs new features, etc.) and customer challenges (selling ahead of your skis, users that are expensive to support, difficult clients that abuse your team, etc.).

Building trust at a startup is no different than building it in any arena - tell the truth, do what you say you will, communicate proactively, and show you are willing to do the things you ask of others.

Apart from the list, a few more important things to keep in mind: - KYP (Know Your People): It's important to know your people, their goals, aspirations and motivations to build a culture of trust in an organisation. Have weekly sit-downs with individuals and know what's happening in their lives. This gives you the ability to be empathetic and guide your people to achieve their full potential - Timely conflict resolution: Conflicts are a part of every startup. No matter how small or big they are, how and when you handle them defines you as a leader and goes a long way toward building trust within the organisation. Nip conflicts in the bud and do it in a respectful and dignified manner.

Before people decide to think of your message or advice or instruction, they decide what they think of you. Therefore, in any setup, before anyone decides to follow your guidance or trust your decisions, they make a judgment about you as an overall person. Such decision is based on trust, respect and connect, whether they perceive you as someone who truly understands and cares about their needs, concerns, and aspirations. And that trust is built over SIX components. Those are empathy, competency, integrity, consistency, reliability and vulnerability. All are important, But the order matters. Here, the empathy takes you to the door of TRUST and RESPECT, and competency, integrity, consistency, reliability and vulnerability, gets you going.
