At a previous company I was in a meeting with a CEO who asked "what do we have to do to say we are innovative?" --- this was the wrong answer and led to empty plans and promises, with ultimately no innovation. Often there is this perception of balance between Innovation and Reliability as if they are opposite to each other and I beg to differ. It is possible to be innovative in being more reliable for example if you are delivering food , and you try a better way to package so the food stays warmer for longer time , this innovation does not impact the reliability of your service but enhance it . So be cognizant of this and focus on making evolutionary changes via innovation and not revolutionary changes that tend to impact reliability

This approach balances the need for reliability (ensuring quality) with the ability to innovate by empowering workers to halt production when they identify issues, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

"Innovation" and "Reliability" (Stability) surface frequently in Agile contexts as a foundational "polarity". These are not "problems to solve" but rather "tensions to balance" through savvy, vigilant management. Polarity Mapping can be used to explore polarities, and the tool is perfectly scalable to navigate dilemmas and dichotomies experienced by individual, team, large groups, and even entire orgs. The most powerful aspect of using polarity mapping to explore these tensions to manage is that it automatically contextualizes the question to the specific dynamics that exist in that moment and the interrelations between everyone engaged. It also surfaces multiple perspectives in a non-threatening way so reality and values can emerge.

As an example - if you are services have production incidents, instead of working on new features you will always be in a fire fighting mode. Similarly if you donot adopt to ever changing needs to customers, you may see customers leaving you. For reliability, define metrics, aim at continuous improvement & take regular feedbacks For innovation, define measurable outcome from the experiment, ensure its aligned to a business goal & define pivot or preserve milestones

In one of the companies I worked for, we had a great way for Agile transformation, we implemented the concept of "Innovation Sprints." Every few iterations, the team dedicated one sprint solely to exploring innovative ideas and experimental projects. This allowed them to balance their focus on reliability during regular sprints while also fostering creativity and continuous learning. The innovation sprints resulted in exciting new features and product improvements that were integrated into the main product, enhancing both innovation and reliability.

You don't really have to invest a lot of time and effort to understand how things are trending directionally. With polarity mapping, you can also integrate a "third way" approach which sets "early warning indicators" and "positive affirmations" so people can proceed with confidence and make whatever adjustment are necessary to remain in balance. Remaining almost always in the "up side" and out of the "down side" ensure avoidance of any negative consequences that would erupt from an imbalance.
