I think the key thing here is about preparing for the unknown. We’ve seen many shocks and disruption over the last years, and businesses and people need to build resilience to cope with them. If you don’t look at sensitivity you don’t know how exposed you are with your current plan of action, so by creating different scenarios and sensitivities you can assess your risk level should something change. Then you can make better decisions and create back-up plans accordingly.

Although I believe that scenario planning is extremely beneficial in planning and preparing for the unknown, I don’t think it’s the only factor in planning for what you want. When it comes to bringing your business to success you have to hold your leadership team and your staff accountable to your expectations as the owner and to the company’s goals. Scenario planning provides you the opportunity to adapt to different outcomes, goal setting and metric tracking will allow you course correct today rather than later.

This maximizes the diversity of ideas since each person has a chance to come up with their own ideas. As a group, take time to collect ideas from everyone, rather than jumping on the first scenarios proposed. This ensures you spend time on the most relevant ideas, and not just the fastest or loudest contributors. Consider scheduling different discussions -- one for just brainstorming potential scenarios, another meeting to discuss the impact of the most relevant scenarios, yet another meeting to discuss proposed actions or responses.
