My take is this: if you're doing things like hackathons for 'accolades & advancing your career' you're going to have a terrible time. Hackathons come from a genuine curiosity to learn new technologies & build things (and of course meeting interesting people). You'll likely be hacking all night so it's a little more involved then a networking mixer. People will be able to smell bs'ers a mile off.

I don’t know much about hackers but going to the event can provide valuable insights on how others may breach your company’s system. Praemontius praemuntius, fairwarned is fairarmed, the better you know the enemy’s strengths and vulnerabilities the less likely your company will fall victim to the pimple faced kids in their parents eating Hot Pockets.
