How can Construction Management professionals collaborate to ensure job site safety?

Safety starts with effective communication between all staff in the Construction process. Concise communication, and collaboration between all parties involved is absolutely essential. Safety is the responsibility of everyone on a job site, and if anyone in the group doesn’t understand the liability, or simply does not comprehend the risks associated with how they are performing the work then how do they ensure they are performing their work safely? Transparency is key, and it is important for all project personnel to ensure they have clearly communicated the information to perform the tasks necessary to safely complete the project, not just the most cost effective or efficient way. Safety needs to be priority over production.

One needs to understand the importance of legal liability as it clearly states the duties and the relation a Construction Manager needs to share with the Safety Officer. Safety is for the well-being of employees, safety culture of the company. Construction management involves all parties of the organization to mitigate or eliminate risks and hazards which poses a danger to employees. All in all , a good relation between the CM and SO improves the growth of the company and safety of the employees!

In my experience, safety implementations at construction site are the responsibility of everyone, starting from top management to the labors. HSE Policies and procedures shall be audited to ensure the effectiveness of each, HSE daily/weekly walkthrough are necessary for all the project forces (client representatives, project management consultant, site supervision, main contractor and its subcontractors) where findings are highlighted, ensured to be closed, lessons learned taken from everyone. HSE quick meetings before every activity starts are effective, and transfers the information and knowledge are important to ensure the safety mentality is reached to everyone and everyone is acting based on this mentality and took full responsibility.

Develop a culture among all team member that the most important part of their work day is being safe. We want everyone to go home after a long day at work and enjoy time with their families. Having a culture where safety comes first will inevitably create a safer working environment

The first step to successful collaboration is to clarify the roles and responsibilities of each party regarding safety. This includes defining the scope, objectives, and expectations of the project, as well as the safety standards, regulations, and policies that apply.

Construction Management professionals can collaborate effectively to ensure job site safety through the following measures: 1. Regular Safety Meetings: Conducting regular safety meetings with all workers to discuss potential hazards, review safety protocols, and address any safety concerns that may arise on the job site. 2. Comprehensive Safety Training: Providing comprehensive safety training programs for all workers, ensuring that everyone is aware of the proper safety procedures and protocols to follow while on the job site.

By implementing these measures, construction management professionals can create a safer work environment and reduce the risk on the construction site:- 1. Safety Training: Provide regular safety training sessions for all workers to ensure they are aware of potential risks and know how to use PPEs correctly. 2. Enforcement: Establish and enforce strict safety protocols. This includes consequences for not wearing or improperly using PPE. 3. Emergency Response Plan: Develop and communicate a clear emergency response plan, including procedures for incidents related to site safety. 4. Safety Meetings: Conduct regular safety meetings to discuss any recent incidents, address concerns, and reinforce the importance of safety measures

PPE should always be the last resort, make sure you provide safety measures to reduce risk to a minimum, for example make use of a MEWP instead of a ladder, make use of innovative means to inspect any underground work before putting people inside. And so on

It is important to understand the task that needs to be done in order to be able to identify the risk, hazards, and procedures involves. Once understanding of the task is there, it is a lot easier to understand the risk it involves and the need of using the right PPE to protect ourselves, and / or team during the work as well as working with the right procedures to ensure safety during work, after and completion of work in orderly manners. With that being said, continuous learning, reminder and education is needed. This is where lead person plays an important role to educate continuously on using the right PPE, working safely and correctly at all time. Safety is everybody responsibility!

It all starts with the management teams of all trades agreeing to 1 common goal “the well being of all our people”. If you can agree to that, have an AM brief daily outlining the days events that will and I say will adversing affect the safety of all on site and those surrounding your project. Yes the general public too have a vested interest in the overall safety of what goes on on your project. Remember the life you save could be your own.

There should never be a question of "I wonder what is the safety culture here?" when one steps on your project, facility, etc. It should start with the sign(s) on the door or gate and instantly be recognized once entered. From the clean worksite and proper PPE compliance to the robust safety intro/presentation that clearly states risks, emergency processes, and correct mitigations followed by the interactions with employees. A great safety culture is something to be extremely proud of and those employees will not hesitate to share that with you any chance they can! I know I do!

Whilst I encourage colleagues in construction management to build relationships with operations counterparts on site, up to even being able to ask them to stop ongoing operations temporarily so that they can better understand ongoing construction process and procedure - particularly in consideration of safe practice, there is often some reluctance due to fear of delaying works. By challenging the processes they are inspecting however, they may be able to uncover potential improvements in the quality of outcomes and perhaps even in the time taken to complete works. More difficult to quantify will be improvement implemented in terms of safer completion of works, but over the course of a career in construction it will always be significant.

To understand this, consider how Toyota's production system values and encourages input from front line workers. This trickles down to improve quality, safety, and production. A blame culture, like fault finding instead of fact finding during investigations is an immediate killer of a positive safety culture. Culture comes down to motivation. Ask yourself: What do they do when I'm not looking? If leaders motivate through a culture of fear, chances of widespread buy-in are limited. When leaders clearly value participation and input from all levels, the motivation comes from the workforce themselves. People are more likely to get excited about ideas or improvements they've suggested, than being forced into a rigid system.

Construction Management professionals can enhance job site safety by proactively identifying and communicating potential hazards. Implementing and rigorously monitoring comprehensive safety plans is crucial. Ensuring the provision and usage of appropriate personal protective equipment is a fundamental step. Promoting and supporting a strong safety culture within the team encourages vigilance and responsibility. Leveraging and integrating technology, such as wearables for monitoring health and safety conditions, can significantly improve safety measures. Regularly reviewing and improving safety performance based on feedback and incident analysis helps in continuously elevating safety standards on the job site.

As a construction manager, I view the integration of technology as a pivotal step in advancing job site safety. Embracing tools, devices, software, and systems that enhance or automate safety processes signifies a commitment to efficiency and effectiveness. Collaborating across teams to carefully select technology that aligns with project needs is crucial. Equally important is providing comprehensive training to workers, ensuring they are adept in utilizing the technology efficiently. PMs and procurement experts must ensure vendor evaluation criteria leading to appointment of vendors gives meaningful weight to safety management 4) Daily safety engagement platforms. The power of toolbox talks can never be over emphasised 5) Training and induction 6)Harnessing AI tech. The use of robotics to access dangerous/confined spaces can reduce incidences

Safety Performance:- 1.Safety protocol plays a vital role during execution. 2.We are nowadays executing different types of structure as per requirement. According to the new structure/project safety protocol also changes and need improvement.

Implementing safety sign boards in multiple languages is a proactive approach, considering the diverse linguistic backgrounds of labor in a multicultural environment like Qatar. This aligns with Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) regulations and fosters better communication, ensuring that safety information is accessible to all workers. Such inclusive practices contribute to a safer work environment and demonstrate a commitment to addressing the unique needs of a diverse workforce.

Continuously evaluating past experiences, learning from incidents, and implementing refinements to elevate overall safety performance and mitigate future risks.

Construction managers should develop and enforce comprehensive safety policies and procedures that address specific hazards and risks associated with the project. These policies should be communicated clearly to all workers and strictly enforced.

Safety starts with understanding construction processes, once this is understood it can heavily influence the Design, procurement, programming and sequencing, the practical requirements to install / build a given element, the maintenance of the installation post completion and finally the demolition of the building at the end of its lifecycle. A key example of this is offsite manufactured elements such as precast concrete products, pre fabricated gatehouses and bathroom pods. The effect this has on safety by limiting exposure of site operatives to site conditions, keeping them in controlled environments also increasing quality, the speed of construction. This has revolutionised the industry.

In my point of view, it is an HSE induction training that plays a pivotal role here, such training which cascades to frontline workers leads to communicating the hazards and appropriate controlling actions and if followed by operation control by HSE responsible people will contribute to construction safety.

Conduct a compitence gap alalysis on the team, Management down. Identify any gaps and deliver any training needs identified. Conduct the whole proces through project life cycle. This adds value to the team and reduces unplanned negitive events.

Is is crucial to ensure that the technology we adopt is user-friendly and seamlessly integrates into existing systems. Overly complex or disruptive tools can lead to poor adoption and ultimately fail to improve safety. The goal should be to make safety protocols more intuitive and ingrained in the day-to-day operations, thus making safety a natural part of the job rather than an additional task.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Have you ever been at home working on a project on a ladder and thought I’ll just climb on this top step to finish quick since I don’t have a taller ladder? That same thing happens on a job site. People want to be productive and just do what they think it takes without thinking about consequences. To have the culture of being able to tell anyone hey I want you to go home to see your family, it’s not worth the risk just get another ladder and take the 15 minutes to do it.
