The credibility you are assigned by becoming a speaker is sometimes above and beyond what you would think. There is a psychology component to this. You are elevated, sometimes physically because you are on an elevated platform, a stage. You are also elevated in the eyes of the audience. They think you MUST know more than they do on the topic because you are on the stage. You've been selected...and vetted. You are an expert.

A call to action in speeches helps to inspire others and can support your acknowledgment as a thought leader. In my ethics presentation where I faced retaliation for exposing unethical leaders I remind people to stay true to their values. I encourage them to do the following: - continue to do good work despite their behavior - keep the faith, there are always lessons learned with every challenge - and always stay true to your personal values. When I was in the Navy, they taught us to uphold honor, courage, and commitment those resonate with me. I wish you well on your speaking journey.

In this environment, effective public speaking demands the speaker to present a compelling vision in addition to having excellent articulation. Speakers have the power to move listeners from passive observers to active participants by clearly conveying the importance and urgency of their message. Effective public speaking can shed light on the significance of a project by bringing abstract ideas to life and making them approachable. This raises engagement and produces tangible actions and outcomes as well.
In the world of social impact, networks are invaluable. Confident public speaking allows you to effectively engage with diverse groups, from community leaders to international organizations. By presenting your ideas assertively, you can foster collaborations and build strategic partnerships that amplify your efforts. Networking events, conferences, and meetings are prime opportunities to showcase your initiatives and attract allies. As Dale Carnegie famously stated, "There are always three speeches, for every one you actually gave. The one you practiced, the one you gave, and the one you wish you gave." This quote highlights the potential influence and reach of public speaking, emphasizing the importance of preparation and the real-world impact of delivered messages.Building social connections through public speaking is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it allows speakers to engage with diverse audiences, fostering understanding and empathy across different social groups. By sharing personal stories, experiences, and insights, speakers can break down barriers, creating a sense of community and solidarity.
The road to social change is often paved with obstacles, from skepticism to resistance. Public speaking confidence equips you to overcome these barriers by articulating clear arguments and responding to challenges with poise. When you can address concerns and counter opposition effectively, you protect the integrity of your projects and maintain momentum. Your assertiveness in speech can also demonstrate your resilience and dedication, qualities that are essential for navigating the complex landscape of social impact work.

we often say practice makes perfect, but narrating the same few lines in front of a mirror doesn't help everyone improve. it's not about memorizing, it's about recognizing. think of: was the delivery good? were the audience engaged? did they understand? did it spark conversations? do you think it's missing some data, emotion, or clarity? when you want to practice, the goal is to refine your idea, not your speech. bring up your ideas in day-to-day conversations, and see how people feel about them. when you know your ideas like the back of your hand and have engaged with it from multiple viewpoints, you no longer need a speech, you just build a narrative around it. and those narratives can change depending on where you speak.
