I've always been open to criticism, sometimes it hurts when it's a negative one, sometimes it comes from a place of jealousy and you have nothing to learn from it, but most of the times, there's always something to learn from feedbacks and criticism. In a professional setting, listening actively is golden and occasionally repeating what the speaker said shows we are paying attention to what is being said. Volunteering is not a “job” but a gift. My first experience was with #AmericanRedCross, late 90’s. Our core #DisasterRelief vols were WW2 vets and one wore a pin: “You can’t fire me! I’m a volunteer!” They were amazing—what they’d seen and done! #RESPECT. So why were they spending their time “working” for nothing? Because they loved it and needed love themselves. They were in it for the sense of self-worth they could give and receive by serving others. Not everyone can serve; it’s a gift you’re given and one you give. So when giving professional feedback to a vol, remember, YOU are the one receiving a salary. They are NOT. They are there to SERVE. Be gentle. Show respect. You may be talking to someone who is also doing your job—for free!!

Volunteering is like eating vegetables, it should be a life-long aspect of anyone's life. Many people would argue that humans are inherently evil; it has been mentioned in movies, in books, in shows. Even though you won't get paid in money, the gratitude you'll receive and the connections you'll build make everything worth it.
