In my experience as a technical sales engineer for an oil field service company, I have learned that success lies not in the products themselves, but in how well they are tailored to address and solve the specific challenges our clients face.

Be very careful with basic knowledge.... If you talk about things you do not understand then you may well be asked to go in depth. Demonstrate your knowledge but do not pretend to understand terms or processes that you do not. There are MANY technical experts out there and they can appear in any position!

In my experience, a detailed contract is necessary to manage obligations and expectation when dealing with complex pipeline engineering work. I believe the best contract model for such complex contracts that have peculiar technical requirements is the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract model, also known as a Turnkey contract model. This gives the vendor the responsibility and freedom (within the overall project goals and front end design) to design and install the solution requested by the buyer without being micromanaged, among other benefits. We have successfully used this model on several occasions including contracts for installation of subsea pipelines, fire suppression systems and repair of crude oil tanks.

If you can't explain it in simple terms then do not try to explain it. It's good to have a knowledge of technical language but you can't talk in acronyms and technical code all the time. Talk in simple terms unless you are asked for technical terms.

Whenever you try to explain something always assume that the person you are trying to explain does not know anything, this will always help you in explaining things in simpler language.

Read the interview panel’s expectations carefully before adjusting the technical difficulty of your responses. Early questions will help you determine whether they prefer a learner or a technical bee. When answering technical questions, keep explanations clear and avoid excessive jargon. For example, if asked about artificial lift methods like ESP, briefly cover its working principle, uses, and limitations. If more detail is desired, the interviewer will ask follow-up questions.

Using STAR is quite a powerful tool. Don't over complicate it, clearly explain the results part and include all tangible results - if a financial figure can be put in, then do.

Keeping up with industry changes is massively important, there is nothing worse that someone stating they have 10 years experience in a role however all their knowledge is 10 years old as they have not kept up with progress. Share with them that you've learned from attending conferences or courses and how you've implemented these learnings into your current role or studies.

In my career i have understood that you always learn by working in something, theoretical knowledge is not enough. In order to stay upto date with the industry you need to step up and try different things
