If you are trying to solve a problem, spend some time on root cause analysis. Often great ideas and lots of resources are invested in strategies that don't fully solve the problem. If your market share is down, there may be more than one cause, so your solution may need multiple dimensions. So make sure you fully understand the problem (problem space) before moving to (solution space) and developing a solution set.

One of the most critical steps before launching on any new path is charting its course with the most direct and clear path to your destination possible. This requires taking the time to study the course people who have already arrived at the destination you want to get to. Study people who were in similar circumstances and wanted the same thing you would like to do. From there, decide which of those people you have researched have actually attained what you are seeking and then seek them out in turn. The single best way to learn how to chart a path for yourself is by getting guidance and coaching (if you can) from those that have already "been there". From there, use their input as well as your unique circumstances to chart a course.

And sometimes, the best decision is the one that challenges standards and stays firm on those criteria. Too often, we are playing not to lose and passing our moments where we can impact the course of our part of the organization. If you are going to hold standards that seem at tension with the norm, you have to line up your stakeholders and enablers. The time may be worth it and the difference between a tactical win and long-lived value.
