In a collaborative setting, rigidity can stifle creativity and hinder progress. To lead a team that thrives on collaboration, you must demonstrate flexibility. This means being open to new ideas and different ways of doing things, even if they diverge from your initial plans. Adaptability allows you to navigate the complexities of group dynamics and ensures that the best ideas, irrespective of their source, are given the space to grow and improve the team's output.

Flexibility in leadership also means being open to feedback and willing to adjust leadership styles to suit the team's evolving needs. here is an example when during a project to implement a new inventory management system, the team encounters unforeseen challenges. The project leader gathers feedback from the team and decides to pivot the strategy, incorporating agile project management techniques. This flexible approach allows the team to adapt quickly, address issues as they arise, and successfully meet project deadlines.

Flexibility is a slippery slope in team dynamics in the mortgage industry. We live in a time where intelligence and innovation are evolving every day. A team that is focused on tasks can feel devalued with a quick pivot. I think this is where clear communication and a common vision to return to are critical to alignment. Communication of a common vision of client success means if there are more efficient ways to accomplish something we do it. Having core values crystalizes that vision and can serve as a filter for ideas and should be considered in addition to the ROI.
Clear communication is the lifeblood of any collaborative effort. As a leader, it's your responsibility to ensure that goals, roles, and expectations are understood by all team members. This clarity prevents misunderstandings and keeps everyone aligned towards common objectives. Moreover, effective communication involves not only speaking but also listening, thereby facilitating a two-way exchange of ideas that can lead to better outcomes and a more cohesive team.

Clear communication is essential for effective leadership and fostering a productive team environment. It involves conveying messages in a way that is easily understood, leaving no room for ambiguity. Know Your Audience: Understand the background, knowledge level, and preferences of your audience. Adapt your message to suit their needs and context. Choose the Right Medium: Select the appropriate communication channel (e.g., email, meeting, chat) based on the message and audience. Use face-to-face or video calls for sensitive or complex discussions. Invite questions and feedback to ensure the message is understood. Provide opportunities for team members to clarify doubts or express their views.

Misunderstanding is devastating for any business, in particular when it occurs within a team. Even high performers cannot operate properly being disoriented with uncertain targeting. Obscure communication style of a leader is demotivational and frustrating for its reports. On the contrary, clear communication supports efficient and effective goal achievement and keeps personnel focused. Need to keep in mind that there is no absolutely homogenous team in the world – people have different background, work style, habits and temperaments. Therefore, clarity means not the same when communicate to different persons. An advanced leader knows what, how and even when to communicate to team members to make things well understood and accepted.
Engagement is key to a successful team. As a leader, you should cultivate an environment where each team member feels motivated to contribute their best work. This involves recognizing individual strengths and assigning tasks accordingly, as well as encouraging participation in decision-making processes. When team members are engaged, they are more committed to the team's success and more likely to collaborate effectively with others.

Encouraging engagement also means creating opportunities for team members to take ownership of projects and initiatives, fostering a sense of accountability and investment in the team's success. here is another example to showcase how to encourage engagement: a supply chain leader optimisation project assigns different aspects of the project to small groups within the team, allowing them to take full responsibility for their parts. This approach not only leverages individual strengths but also increases overall team engagement as members feel more accountable and motivated to deliver high-quality results.

Conflict is inevitable in any team, but the way it's handled can make or break the spirit of collaboration. As a leader, you need to be adept at conflict resolution, approaching disputes with a calm and impartial stance. Your goal should be to find solutions that satisfy all parties involved while maintaining team harmony. Effective conflict resolution can actually strengthen team bonds and enhance collaborative efforts by addressing underlying issues head-on.

When collaborating as a team, conflict is inevitable. The key is to not shy away from it or let it fester. Address it early. Create an environment of trust, respect and empathy where you can address the conflict openly, inviting parties to come together to communicate their perspectives and the drivers which prompted the conflict to arise. 'I' statements should be used rather than 'other' focused language. The aim is to find a harmonious resolution wherever possible, with parties meeting in the middle or, at the very least, reaching a point of acknowledgement and acceptance for each other's perspectives. Utilise calm, open and non judgemental communication techniques that promote empathy and respect in order to find a mutual way forward.

Effective conflict resolution also involves preemptive measures such as establishing clear communication channels and team norms to minimise the occurrence of conflicts. In a situation where two team members disagree on the best approach to streamline warehouse operations, the leader facilitates a mediation session. By allowing each party to voice their concerns and then guiding them towards a compromise that incorporates elements of both viewpoints, the leader resolves the conflict constructively, resulting in an innovative and agreed-upon solution.

Conflicts are a complex topic, they can arise from various reasons, their solutions should be related to business regulations, leaving room for forgiveness.
The most powerful way to instill a culture of collaboration and teamwork is to lead by example. Show your team what it means to collaborate by actively participating in group efforts, sharing credit for successes, and taking responsibility for setbacks. Your actions will set the standard for how team members interact with each other. By embodying the principles of teamwork in your own behavior, you inspire others to do the same, creating a ripple effect that uplifts the entire team.

Leading by example is number one in my book. As a retired Border Patrol Agent, I am proud that the U.S. Border Patrol's motto is Honor First. However, with such an outstanding motto, leadership needs to do their best to live up to that high standard. It was very disappointing to the troops to see leaders who did not live out our motto. When leaders lead by example and set the high bar of Honor First, they inspire others to follow their good example. Unfortunately the converse is also true, in that, if they lead by a poor example they lower the bar through their poor example. I am so thankful to those who did lead by good example, they inspired Honor First in many others.

Leadership by example is the cornerstone of fostering a collaborative team. Ditch the sideline: Publicly acknowledge and celebrate team wins, big or small. This reinforces the value of teamwork and motivates everyone. Roll up your sleeves: Get involved in the trenches alongside your team. Demonstrate that you're not above the work and value practical contributions. Open communication: Share information openly and encourage questions. This builds trust and fosters a sense of shared purpose. Embrace diverse perspectives: Actively seek out different viewpoints and encourage healthy debate. It leads to better decision-making and a more inclusive environment.

When you are working across teams and organisations- be prepared to acknowledge the difficult side of collaboration and teamwork. If the goal is building something new or transforming, the outcome may mean loss of power, status, certainty or identity for some collaborators, to achieve the agreed goal. Acknowledging what people and teams have given up to move forward increases trust in relationships. It is just as important as celebrating the win.
