Here's how you can effectively lead and motivate a team during times of change or uncertainty.
Leading and motivating a team, especially in facility management (FM), where the environment is often dynamic and subject to unexpected changes, requires a strategic approach. During times of change or uncertainty, your ability to guide your team effectively is crucial. It involves clear communication, empathy, understanding the individual and collective concerns of your team members, and fostering a sense of stability and direction amidst the chaos. As you navigate through challenging periods, remember that your role as a leader is not just to manage operations but also to inspire confidence and maintain morale.
Embracing change is the first step in leading your team through uncertain times. You need to show that you're adaptable and willing to embrace new challenges. Communicate the changes clearly, explaining the reasons behind them and how they will benefit the team and the organization as a whole. Acknowledge any discomfort or fear that your team may feel and provide support as everyone adjusts. By being a role model for adaptability, you can inspire your team to follow suit and view change as an opportunity for growth.

Change is a challenge. Many organizations fear the term ‘change’. Change is inevitable, it’s better to promote change before your competitors force you to change. In my experience as a Project Engineer, whenever a new technology or ideology was introduced in any aspect of my project it was always greeted with practical and technical challenges. However it took lots of courage to go ahead and implement it , well yea it is difficult in the beginning but in the long run it gave multiple yields in terms of overall project profitability and time management such as it has become an inevitable part of every project now.

The team needs a GROWTH MINDSET during times and uncertainty and rapid change before they can embrace challenges. They need to view setbacks as learning opportunities, and maintain resilience. 1) Focus on what you can control and set small, achievable goals. 2) Stay curious and open to new experiences, seeking feedback and learning from others. 3) Practice self-compassion and maintain a positive attitude, recognizing that effort and persistence lead to improvement. 4) Create a supportive environment for small set-backs and celebrate small wins. 5)Adaptability and a proactive approach to change will help you thrive amidst uncertainty.
-
Change should not be feared buy embraced. Effective communication is essential with reasons why the change. Expectation of change. Don't be afraid if change is not a success. It shows strength of convictions allowing the Team to flex it muscles and try new things. If the change is successful the Team is successful and the benefits are tangible.
-
The only constant is change. This occurs from the minute we are born until departing. So, we are always adapting in some form or another. Uncertainty, in my view, occurs when there is no leadership involved in embracing change. A leader must embrace change and clearly communicate constantly to the team, in effect, being a servant role model. This engenders trust which reduces uncertainty and anxiety. In doing so this clearly supports their need for information and aids the process. These three are the drivers which supports goals, flexibility and morale. This circular process occurs continually since information from multiple sources is jaded, combines gossip and misinformation. The leader must be vigilant in flowing information.
-
As leaders it is important to help the team by setting positive attitudes towards change and embracing it first. When others see how you respond, they follow because they look for examples to follow. Leadership is about many things but most importantly supporting the team so they believe in what you’re doing and are ready to accept the direction the company is going. Always asking for feedback is a way to gain commitment and respect. Empowering others people to speak up gives them confidence and would provide Leadership with insight as to how everyone views the change..
Clear communication is essential when leading a team through change. It's important to convey messages with clarity to avoid misunderstandings and to ensure everyone is on the same page. Be transparent about what you know, what you don't know, and what you're working to find out. Regular updates help to build trust and prevent the spread of rumors that can damage team morale. Encourage open dialogue and listen to your team's concerns and suggestions, as this can lead to valuable insights and solutions.
-
Communication is key in times of uncertainty or changes. 1. Have an open talk with employees to hear their thoughts or burning questions 2. Set clear direction and share the updates 3. Ensure ease of communication with team and vice versa at all times While some might be uncomfortable with the changes, it is important to communicate why the changes are necessary and enable agility within the organization
-
Effectively leading and motivating a team during times of change or uncertainty involves clear communication and adaptability. Ensure everyone understands the situation, the goals, and their roles. Foster an environment where questions and feedback are encouraged. Learning to pivot to new markets that are less affected by the economic environment is crucial. When one market segment suffers in commercial construction, another often gains traction. By staying informed about market trends and being flexible, you can guide your team to seize new opportunities and maintain momentum.

Communication is not just in words but in actions to achieve the desired outcome. Lead by example so that they understand the process to the desired outcome. Eliminate misconceptions and misunderstandings in the initial stages. Avoid confrontations caused by misinterpretations or confusions.
-
A clear and concise communication is most essential during any change. The purpose, larger good for the masses and benefits for the organisation need to be communicated to all. Buy-in must be completed prior to implementing the change, the success or failure depends on the communication and acceptance by stakeholders.
Supporting your team is about more than just offering words of encouragement. It involves actively listening to their concerns, understanding the challenges they face, and providing the resources they need to succeed. Whether it's additional training to handle new responsibilities or more flexible work arrangements to accommodate personal needs during a transition, showing that you care about their well-being can greatly enhance motivation and commitment.
-
Change is uncomfortable and even scary for many team members. Many people like the status quo, while others seek new and innovative way of performing work that routinely requires change. The key to supporting teams through changes is effective communications with ALL team members that must include listening/hearing their thoughts, concerns and questions about how the change will affect the overall team and the individual team members. This will likely require group and individual dialogues plus compromise regarding the approach to implementing the change. Effective communication will allow everyone to engage and be a part of and ideally embrace the change with a positive outlook.
-
Supporting your team is essential and training is key, I remember times when a company brought in a new system we would receive good in house training either from in house colleagues who had been properly briefed or an experienced third party - sadly recent experiences have differed greatly. When change is forced upon you be prepared to speak up as some people may be slower to adapt to change be it a new system or a new role. Don't be afraid to ask for additional training or time, any decent company or manager should support you.

In terms of change and uncertainty, it is important to communicate effectively and support your team members. As a leader it’s important to recognise that we are all human and have different skill sets which need to be nurtured in order to drive business success.
-
During any change the team goes through a lot of turmoil. Supporting the team during this difficult period is an absolute responsibility of any leader. Each team member would be requiring some assistance, be it emotionally, or rofessionally, these need to be understood and accomodated by the team leaders.
Setting clear, achievable goals gives your team a sense of direction during times of change. Break down larger objectives into smaller, manageable tasks to help reduce anxiety and provide a clear path forward. Celebrate milestones and recognize individual and team achievements. This not only boosts morale but also reinforces the progress being made, which can be especially motivating when the end result seems far off.

Setting clear, achievable goals gives your team direction during times of change. Break down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks to reduce anxiety and establish a clear path forward. Celebrate milestones and recognize both individual and team achievements. This not only boosts morale but also reinforces the progress made, which can be particularly motivating when the end goal seems distant. 🎯🏆 Providing this structure and recognition keeps the team focused and motivated, transforming uncertainty into a journey of shared success. 🌟

-
The settings of goals as well as how we divide and conquer our tasks are two important factors in how smooth a project will run as well as in helping to determine the overall success of these goals. I've personally witnessed the beauty in celebrating milestones, hundreds of times in various projects. Timing is essential and a great leader should know when to prepare and when and how to celebrate project wins both individually and as a whole. When the output matches the input our workmanship is properly acknowledged but when it does not match, further evaluation is required to determine what may be negatively affecting the progress and the final ouput.
-
Goal setting is key. Start by reflecting on your own goals. When setting the goals for your team be open about what you expect of yourself to influence their own goal setting. Ensure the team have shared goals, that are SMART.
Encouraging flexibility in your team is crucial for navigating uncertainty. Promote a culture where it's okay to try new approaches and make mistakes. This can lead to innovative solutions and a more resilient team. Flexibility also means being open to adjusting roles and responsibilities as needed to adapt to new circumstances. By fostering an environment where change is embraced rather than feared, you help your team remain agile and responsive.
-
While a change may be needed to improve the performance of a team or overall company, not everyone can comfortably embrace a change. This does not mean the team member no longer fits in with the change in direction, process, or actions. A diversified company will be composed of many teams working together to succeed. By encouraging open communication with the uncomfortable team member, the reasons for their discomfort can be fully understood and actions can be taken to seek resolution of the discomfort. If the actions are not feasible or aren't successful, opportunities to change the role of the team member may be possible. The ultimate goal must be to remain flexible in enabling a team member to continue their valuable contribritutions.
-
Change requires flexibility. A rigid approach to implement change will always backfire. To buy in the stakeholders we must clearly communicate to them the flexibility offered to achieve the change.
-

Flexibility, as I have proven in my own role, is critical to staying employed in today's engineering world. We must accept and adapt to change whether good or bad.
Maintaining morale is key to keeping your team motivated during challenging times. Regularly check in with your team members to gauge their feelings and provide reassurance. Organize team-building activities that can lighten the mood and strengthen relationships. Keep the lines of communication open and ensure that everyone feels heard and valued. A positive team spirit can make all the difference in overcoming the hurdles of change.
-
Maintaining morale is crucial in any group or organization as it impacts productivity, collaboration, and overall success. Here are several strategies to maintain high morale: 1. Open Communication 2. Recognition and appreciation 3. Professional Development 4. Work-Life Balance 5. Inclusive Culture 6. Clear Goals and Expectations 7. Supportive Leadership 8. Positive Work Environment 9. Team Building Activities 10. Addressing Issues Promptly By focusing on these areas, organizations can maintain high morale, leading to increased satisfaction, productivity, and overall success.
-
To maintain morale, you need to understand what's on your team members minds. Encourage them coming and talking to you about it. Create safe space and opportunities for that. If you are always busy and never available, they will not come because they will not want to bug you. Then listen. Understand their point of view first, and only then respond accordingly.
-
The importance of maintaining a good morale during changes or though projects is highly underestimated. You can't operate as an actual team if the morale is low and there isn't any alignment within the team. Maintaining morale doesn't need to be that difficult though. Be there when it gets difficult, even though you can't actually add or do something. If you have a change very early in the morning or even late at night, make sure you are there wit the team. Make the difficult steps in a project a team effort and make sure to celebrate the achievements and milestones. Grabbing some pizza with the whole team after a challenging moment strengthens the bond between team members and smoothens the road to the next one.

I believe that effective leadership in challenging times requires strong communication and motivation skills. Here are some ways to begin: - One useful approach is... - On the contrary, I don't agree with... - I've observed an example of...
-
Showing care to the team by actively listening to them and addressing their concerns. Offer them necessary support whether it’s training, counselling or providing additional tools for their improvement

The biggest thing to consider in any uncertain times is to understand what allowed you get to where you are as a business. The people who are the hands on are the key ingredient in any business, whether it be initiating the work or supporting other people to the forefront of the business. Change is inevitable so has to be expected. Making sure you fully understand the changes comes from trusted communication and actions.
-
One of the things I have found useful in this case is to lead from the field, being close to your team and empower them to take needed actions without fear. Encouraging team to work on one team spirit is another important factor, no individual interests to be accepted, one team and one mission. Another crucial element is to keep the team calm and focused, no need to create unnecessary panic or frustration. At the end, people will do what they are supposed to do within the available resources. At this stage, it is very important to keep the environment clean from any negative thoughts or vibes. Stay Grateful… Ibrahim

During times of change or uncertainty, even the most loyal staff may be tempted to leave as survival instincts kick in. When employees can't plan for their future, panic sets in, leading them to consider other companies. Thus, staff engagement is crucial for retention, and effective leadership is required. This involves openly communicating, engaging staff, allaying fears, correcting wrong narratives, clarifying information, renewing belief in the corporate strategic mission, showing how they align with organizational goals, giving a sense of belonging, boosting morale, and motivating the workforce.
-
Don't forget to always communicate: - What's in it for the Organization - What's in it for the Employees - What's in it for the Shareholders - What's in it for the Customers/Clients This will help people understand that the decision was thoughtful and it will help build and maintain trust.
-
What’s incredibly important in todays landscape is to take things like this with a pinch of salt. Everyone feels like they know the ingredients for successful outcomes yet sometimes the only thing we need is to understanding and apply commitment. We’re all different, we all have pressures that the world doesn’t know about and as such we have to just do our best. Expectation is normally the main ingredient of disappointment.
