Dealing with a critical parent about your teaching methods: Feeling overwhelmed?

Listening to parents is vital. We do not see what happens outside school unless there is communication between parents and school. Parents know their children and they often bring great insight. Unless there is clear guidance in Ed Psych reports, educators should acknowledge parents' input. Personally, I had many meetings with my son's teachers explaining what was and wasn't working for him at school. I often felt pushed away and not taken seriously, which led to homeschooling. Neurodivergent students' parents know best! Please listen to them!

It is important to listen to the parents' concerns. It may have some validity. Might. Most times, they are trying to deflect from their child's or their own inadequacies. Listening to their concerns could be an avenue for you as an educator to improve. Nobody's the full package. Only Rick Flair.

The most important thing to do is allow the parent to speak and vent. If a parent feels heard, h/she will be happy to listen to you too. Acknowledge what the parent is feeling, empathise and then give your feedback.

Dealing with parents requires descent levels of self-control and professionalism. Some could be carried with their emotions resulting in unwanted arguments. As teachers, we should consider and bare that in mind. I suggest that we do more listening and less talking when dealing with such cases.

It is natural to feel defensive when a parent comes with a complaint about your teaching methods. 1. On most days lend a sympathetic ear, understand where the parent is coming from (as hard as it may sound). 2. Remind yourself that you as an educator and the parent are on the same side (this really helps) and this feedback is helping both of you become better at connecting with the child. 3. Look at the whole situation holistically, you may understand things even from the child's perspective, so put all the viewpoints on the table besides all the student work that you have to discuss. All these can help bringing out holistic solutions and therefore build stronger connections within your parent network.

Listen to what they have to say but let them know the classroom is your domain. Much like the savannah, the giraffes and gazelles are free to graze but the lion dictates who runs where. Don't be a tyrrant but at the same time 24 different people can't steer the wheel.

I find that it is important to listen to the parent, they know their child best, and parents just like children want to be heard. So, it is important that you take time to listen to the parent, try and understand their perspective. Then before giving them your thoughts, in your own words repeat back to them what they said so that they know that you actually heard them. Then make your decision on how you will handle your classroom, ensuring the parent understands that while they only have their Childs best interest at heart you have the 20 students children in your class bests interests so your decisions will not be based solely on what is best for just their child but for the learning environment as a whole and all who are part of it

In my experience as a sexuality educator in India, following up with the parent after the solutions are offered and implemented has been helpful. It made sure we both were on the same page of expectations and foster trust. One time I also stepped into address critical feedback for a fellow facilitator, it was tricky as I wasn't present in the session however I was well aware of their facilitation style so addressing and taking critical feedback by parents to an amicable closure was possible.
