Meta Glasses: News and Expected Price, Release Date, Specs; and More Rumors

Meta’s AR glasses aren’t expected until 2027; Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses get more features in 2024

While Orion, Meta's augmented reality glasses, are still a few years away, the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, released in 2023, have audio, video, and live streaming capabilities.

When Will Meta Glasses Be Released?

Meta released the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses in 2023 but also has plans for a more ambitious smart glasses project.

In 2024, the company demonstrated a prototype of AR/MR holographic glasses codenamed "Orion."

The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses came out on October 17, 2023. We don't have a release date on Orion.

Orion Prototype: What We Know

At Meta Connect, we also saw a prototype–codenamed "Orion"–for the still-in-development full AR/MR holographic glasses. We got more details about how they work, which involves tiny projectors in the glasses' arms that feed images to the lenses.

Orion will accept voice commands from Meta AI, interpret hand and eye tracking, and have a new neural interface. The last one involves a wrist-based unit.

The Orion product is still in development, but we have some specs. The displays are silicon carbide and have a 70-degree field of view. The frames are magnesium for both weight reduction and heat management.

We first learned about these glasses from The Verge, which obtained a presentation covering Meta's AR/VR roadmap through 2027.

Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses Specs & Features

The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses have the following specs:

  • 12-megapixel photo sensor
  • 1080p video capture
  • 32GB storage (about 500 photos or 100 30-second videos)
  • 5 microphones
  • Stereo speakers

The Ray-Bans come with a case that can charge the glasses about eight times before they need to be recharged, too.

These glasses seemed to be aimed more at the creator space than the AR/VR products out now or planned by Meta (and others). So, if you are building, cooking, or even vacationing, you can record stills, videos, or live streams on Facebook or Instagram.

At Meta Connect 2024, the company added more features to the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, including:

  • Calling up audio from apps like Spotify, Amazon Music, Audible, and iHeart Radio by voice.
  • Using Meta AI to leave yourself visual reminders like where you parked.
  • Scanning QR codes and phone numbers you're looking at.
  • Multi-modal video AI gives you feedback and instructions based on what you're looking at.
  • Live translation.
  • Collaboration with Be My Eyes, an app that connects visually impaired people with sighted volunteers.
  • Prescription, transition, and other lens options.
  • Limited-edition glasses with a transparent frame.
