A former colliery, Clifton Country Park's 119 acres (48 ha) of woodland, fields and lakes are situated next to a double bend in the River Irwell. The site contains a local nature reserve that has received the prestigious Green Flag Award.
Three of the Irwell Sculpture Trail's artworks can be found here. The Lookout by Tim Norris was created in 2001 and takes inspiration from the landscape and the materials remaining from the site's industrial past.
Rosie Leventon's Dig was inspired by a nearly extinct boat, called a 'starvationer' due to the external ribs of its construction. These kinds of boats were used to transport coal through the underground tunnels on this site. Finally, Stephen Charnock's 2008 collection, Wet Earth Sculptures, is on the site of the former colliery.
