  • Ideal for strolling and cycling. The central lake in Schwerin

The Pfaffenteich (Low German Papendiek) was formed by the embankment of a dam (later called Spieltordamm) at the northern end probably shortly after the city was founded in the 12th century, initially as a mill pond in a once marshy depression. The waters originally had a length of about 350 meters southerly extent up to the height of the Schloßstraße, where the Mühlendamm was limited to the south and operated since 1178 watermill [1]. From here, the water flowed into the Burgsee. A count's mill was in operation until the 19th century. On Aubach was a second mill, which went into the possession of the cathedral chapter, from then on called Bischofsmühle and was operated until 1914. A frequent topic of controversy between Counts and cathedral chapters, which could also take possession of the mill pond, was the water level of the river. The canons, who still ordered their gardens on the eastern shore, were named after the popular name "Pfaffenteich".

The name of the northern boundary, Spieltordamm, derives from the Middle German word game, which means "stake". A number of piles then protected the accessible by a so-called game gate dam. The Spieltor, a watch and Torschreiberhaus, was built in 1710 and demolished in 1816. [2] The dam was not built until 1826. The Pfaffenteich's water once fed a moat.
