Italy’s Val di Sole, the largest offshoot of Val di Non in north-western Trentino, is a breathtaking spectacle to behold. Embraced to the north by the Ortles Group, to the west by the Tonale Pass, and to the south by the Brenta Dolomites, it stretches along the Noce River to the artificial Lake Santa Giustina near Cles. Here, the beauty of nature knows no seasons – even in winter, it reveals its extraordinariness with animal tracks in the snow and an almost unreal silence.
Exploring this natural masterpiece with snowshoes is like diving into an enchanted, almost magical world. Silence, deep snow-covered forests and unspoilt terrain in an atmosphere of stillness and solitude await you.
If you love nature, open spaces and snow-covered landscapes, and especially if you appreciate calm, we highly recommend a snowshoe hike. This unique experience evokes a distant past when snowshoes were the main means for mountain dwellers to get around during heavy snowfalls.
In Val di Sole, you can follow marked and well-signposted trails or participate in organised excursions. However, before departure, some basic precautions are necessary: always check the avalanche bulletin and the weather forecast. Flexible planning should always be considered. Remember to carry an avalanche self-rescue kit, which is mandatory in these areas and consists of an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe.
The enjoyment of walking in the snow should be carefree and without the need to watch the clock. To ensure maximum enjoyment, we’ve selected ten routes that are perfect for snowshoe hikers of all abilities. You can climb up to the 3,000-metre (9,800 ft) altitude of the Presena Pass, admire the frozen Covel waterfall or explore the Mezzana lakes. Or why not do all ten hikes?
Before setting off, be sure to enquire about the route conditions. All Tours allow stops at mountain huts or refuges to sample traditional delicacies. Always remember to check that they’re open and, if you intend to eat or stay overnight, we recommend booking in advance. In case of sudden hunger, it’s always best to carry a backpack with a snack and a thermos of hot drink.
To ensure an extraordinary snowshoeing experience, we recommend wearing breathable, rainproof winter clothing, adding a warm layer for higher altitudes and a pair of waterproof boots. A cap, gloves, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential. And, of course, don't forget snowshoes and trekking poles. If you don't have the equipment, you can rent everything you need on-site.
Now you have everything you need to start your exploration of Val di Sole. Happy adventures.
