The tower got its name from the Flatow estate in West Prussia, which belonged to Prince Wilhelm and from whose income the construction was financed.

The Flatowturm in the Babelsberg district of Potsdam is located at the height of the Babelsberg in Babelsberg Park. The building consists of a 46 meter high crenellated brick tower with a side extension, an upper battlement, four turrets and a pointed spire.
