The former military checkpoint Checkpoint Charlie was next to the Glienicker bridge the most famous border crossing in Berlin. And he was one of three controlled by the Americans. The others were the border checkpoints Helmstedt-Marienborn (Checkpoint Alpha) and Dreilinden-Drewitz (Checkpoint Bravo). The transition was allowed to be used only by foreigners and employees of the Permanent Representation of the FRG in the GDR and GDR officials.
The atmosphere of the Cold War was as frosty in no other place as here. The transition reached its prominence in October 1961. At that time, Soviet and Allied tanks faced each other with live ammunition. In addition, the checkpoint was the scene of spectacular escapes, which were often deadly. The museum at Checkpoint Charlie documents numerous escape attempts and shows various escape objects.

The former border crossing on Friedrichstraße is an attraction for visitors from Germany and abroad. The fact that there are hardly any original buildings left at Checkpoint Charlie doesn't bother anyone.
Checkpoint Charlie is one of the most famous sights in the city. The original barriers and watchtowers of the former military checkpoint have long since been replaced by replicas, and the wall has disappeared. But that doesn't bother the yearly growing crowd of visitors.
