The Drachenhaus on the Bornstedter Höhenzug, on the northern edge of Potsdam's Sanssouci Park, was built between 1770 and 1772 in the style of a Chinese pagoda. The building, constructed in the spirit of the chinoiserie, was designed by Carl von Gontard according to the specifications of Frederick II. Source: Wikipedia

In 1768, Frederick II received a request from a Rhenish grenadier to plant a vineyard. The following year, he had a 200 m long area of the southern slope terraced on the ridge that follows Sanssouci Palace to the west, also known as "Klausberg". A "vineyard in the Rhineland style with the best vines" developed, or so the grenadier promised his majesty. However, the wine failed and the winemaker resigned. Instead of vines, the king now ordered the cultivation of peaches and "Azaroli apples". In 1770, the long-planned Dragon House was built as quarters for the grenadier. The model was the Ta-Ho Pagoda from Canton, which the English architect William Chambers reported on in a book in 1757. More than 235 years passed since the Dragon House was built. The gem underwent numerous restorations during this time in order to preserve the magic of the illusionistic painting and to continue to make the cheerful and light architecture a tangible experience.
