Railway bascule bridge The route to Oldenburg Central Station leads from Bremen and from Osnabrück over the railway bascule bridge that spans the Hunte. Cyclists and pedestrians can also cross the river here - and enjoy the view of the city landscape on the water and the harbor. The third bridge at this point Since 1954, the rolling bascule bridge has enabled shipping to the city harbor, as its flaps open up to 20 times a day - with a hydraulic drive, which replaced the old electric motors in 2002. When it was completed after around eight years of construction, it was the largest railway bascule bridge in Europe. It replaced the rigid bridge that had temporarily enabled the Hunte to be crossed for around ten years after the Second World War, after the old swing bridge from 1866 was destroyed at the end of the war. Note: Please push bicycles when crossing

The bridge is worth a photo stop. You should also treat yourself to the feeling of standing on the bridge when a train passes over it...unique. Definitely a stop when the bridge is folded up for ship traffic. A real landmark of Oldenburg.

There shouldn't be many of these types of bascule bridges left.
