The name of this park-like facility goes back to Johann Jakob Christian Engel (1762 - 1840), who worked as master chef in the monastery from 1786 to 1819.At his instigation, the area southwest of the monastery wall was redesigned up to about the end of the monastery cemetery. Under his two successors, the garden was expanded more and more.Up until 1855/56, with the final construction phase, the garden was expanded to give it the shape it has today. While the garden was originally reserved for the inmates of the monastery, today many Malchowers and guests enjoy its special charm.
