The triangular pole, which gave this place and the refuge its name, actually exists as an inconspicuous Grantistein with a triangular cross-section. It is somewhat hidden on a small tree in the fork in the road towards Oderbrück.

The Triangular Pile is a historic, approximately 1.35 m high granite landmark southwest of the Brocken in the Harz National Park. The stone set before 1866 marked the border between the Kingdom of Hanover and the Duchy of Brunswick. Originally, this site marked a tri-border region. During the German division here ran the border between the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany. Today runs the border between Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony, where the triangular post is just on the Lower Saxon side and in the Cold War (from the west) was accessible.
