The mill is located on the Molenbeek, near the confluences with the Sassenbeek, the Kraaiwinkelbeek and the Wingebeek. The valley is a swampy, beautiful walking area that connects with the Troostenbergbos freely accessible to walkers. The vast Gempe pond attracts many species of waterfowl.
De Gempemolen is a resting point for walkers and cyclists who either choose the GR footpath or simply want to walk or cycle between De Moedermeule in Gelrode, the castle of Horst or along the Jan-Primus route. The signposted cycling route "de Gemperoute" has the Gempemolen as its starting point.

The Gempemolen is a watermill on the Molenbeek in the hamlet of Gempe.
Hendrik I, Duke of Brabant, donated a piece of land with a water mill in Gempe to the monastery of Gempe in 1229. The monastery also acquired rights to the large Gempe pond, which provided water to power the mill during dry summers. At the beginning of the 17th century, the monastery was authorized to move the Molenbeek more than 600 meters in order to increase the decay of the mill. The monastery leased the mill to a miller for a long time. When the monastery was abolished by the French Revolution, the mill came permanently into private hands. It was almost always used as a grain mill until about 1950. Since 1944 the mill has been listed as a monument.
Over the years, the mill was neglected and fell into disrepair. In 1991 the mill was purchased by the Haacht Brewery. The mill house was renovated and transformed into a tavern. A completely new oak wheel was built, the locks and the mill gutter were replaced.
