Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo is the "People's Square" in the middle of Rome. The square is also known as the "trident" (Tridente), because seen from the north, the square branches off into three long, straight streets, Via del Corso, Via del Babuino and Via di Ripetta.
There are various traditions as to the origin of the name: It is said that "Popolo" is reminiscent of the Roman people who financed this square. Another idea is that the name should come from the poplars that once stood here.

Piazza del Popolo is one of the most famous squares in Rome. It is located in the IVth Rione and was since ancient times the place where the visitor entered Rome, when he traveled from the north via the Via Flaminia or the Via Cassia in the city.

Interestingly, there are different traditions for the name Popolo or the place. First, the name indicates that it was built with the money of the Roman population. On the other hand it reminds of poplars that should have been here in the past. According to another theory, the word 'Popolo' should have nothing to do with the word 'people', but be an old term for a parish.
