After the 1755 Earthquake, the Marquis of Pombal created a public walkway in the area occupied by the lower part of Avenida da Liberdade and Praça dos Restauradores. Despite the name, it was surrounded by walls and gates where only members of high society could pass.

The development of the 90 meter wide and 1100 meter long Avenida in the style of the Wilhelminian style and Art Nouveau initially had a provincial character due to the crisis in Portugal's political and economic situation around 1900. The monument to Rosa Araújo was erected here in 1936.
In the last few decades, numerous older buildings, including valuable ones, have been demolished in the wake of the economic boom and replaced by new buildings by financial institutions and hotels. So also the former picturesque trams from a line of the Lisbon Metro that opened in 1959.
