The Maujahn is an approx. 37ha large moor area (a boiler moor) and lies between the villages of Thunpadel and Schmarsau. The area is under nature protection. In summer there are many insects and rare plants to be seen here (including rushes and sundew).
The moor and the hollow are said to have been formed around 7000 years ago when a salt dome below collapsed due to groundwater subsoil. There is also a legend about the Maujahn that says that there was once a hill with a castle here. A robber baron is said to have lived in the castle and attacked merchants. As a punishment from God, the mountain is said to have collapsed and the robber baron and his castle sank into the moor.
