This fantastic hill is one of two in the south west of Cornwall, lying to the west of Helston and overlooking Mount Bay. Every inch of this area is stunning, and reaching the top of Tregonning Hill allows you to see it all unfold before you. Praa Sands and its gorgeous beach sit below, whilst charming Porthleven is just to the south east.
Tregonning Hill forms a ridge running north west to south east and has plenty of history embedded into its bracken-strewn hillside. It was once the site of a hillfort and the remains of a medieval settlement lie on its northern flank. China clay was mined here and turned into the first hard-paste porcelain in the country. The hill has information boards, explaining the industrial remnants that litter the landscape, adding a fascinating layer to your exploration.
It’s well worth exploring the hillside as a whole to get views in every direction. The panoramas feature St Austell, the gleaming bay and a flood of pretty patchwork fields. There’s a stone war memorial standing at the summit, which sits at 636 feet (194 m).
The war memorial (WW1 & WW2) to the "parish" Germoe marks the top of Tregonning Hill, at 194 meters above sea level. That doesn't sound very high, but it's higher than the rest of the country nearby, and the hill gives great views of the north and south coasts, Mounts Bay, The Lizard etc on a clear day.
