A gray or monotonous world is always a synonym for
purgatory or hell.
...The variety of colors brings improvement, brings paradise."

"Living under the rain tower" Hundertwasser residential building
As early as 1985, two architects from Plochingen planned the construction of a residential and commercial building as a ring building around an inner courtyard, which was to be inscribed in the existing streets. 64 apartments, 16 commercial units, 300 additional underground parking spaces - combined with the existing 120 spaces in the neighboring building - and 2300 square meters of space for a supermarket - the architects were to accommodate this on the 1.5 hectare area south of Marktstrasse. In 1990, the planning was ready for building permission - and that's when the idea arose to make the building particularly attractive by designing the inner courtyard in a special way. In 1992, the city managed to get in touch with the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. And he was actually willing to design the facade of the inner courtyard.
He was attracted by the fact that the viewer in the inner courtyard "only had Hundertwasser around him and the sky above him" - his own Hundertwasser world. This was not the case with any of his previous buildings and was also completely new for the artist. The developer gave his consent and thus cleared the way for Hundertwasser's colorful fairy-tale world. The privately financed building cost around 60 million marks. The "Living under the Rain Tower" complex has now become a popular attraction. The 33-meter-high "Rain Tower" towers over the building and is visible from afar, crowned by four golden balls. For Hundertwasser, towers have always towered over important buildings as a "pointer to heaven" and so the Rain Tower became another landmark of the city.
The inner courtyard reflects Hundertwasser's philosophy of life: cheerful colors, rounded shapes, playful balconies resting on sturdy ceramic columns characterize the image. Ceramic bands symbolize streaks of rain running down, trees grow from bay windows and on the roofs. Nature is very important to the artist and so the inner courtyard, under which the supermarket and underground car park are located, looks like a natural garden. All shapes are organic, there are no straight lines or right angles anywhere, the windows seem to dance on the facade - every detail shows the signature of the Viennese artist.

Interesting architecture by the somewhat crazy "non-architect" Hundertwasser. Be sure to visit the inner courtyard.
