In addition to a wonderful time travel through the history of coal mining, you can enjoy the beautiful nature and make a detour to an old castle ruins with fantastic views over the Ruhr and surrounding area. A very versatile hike.

The castle ruins Hardenstein is always worth a visit. In the adjacent forest you will find many references to the history of coal mining in the Ruhr area. A wonderful journey through the beginnings of coal mining in the region. Some coal mines date back to the 17th century.
Only a few meters from the castle ruins, you can cross the Ruhr on a ferry (also with bicycles and his dog) and continue from there on his tour. This service is completely free, but the operators are happy about a small donation.
I can only recommend anyone who has not been there to make a detour there once. It is worth it!

You can take some great pictures at the castle ruins, especially in autumn and when there is snow in winter too! The Hardenstein castle ruins are also always worth a little detour. A few metres from there you can take a ferry to the other side of the Ruhr. The trip is free and you can take bikes and dogs with you without any problem. The operators are happy to accept a small donation (not required!) for the trip.
