Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square, better known as Terreiro do Paço), was the land where the Royal Palace of Lisbon sat for more than 200 years. It is one of the most important squares in Lisbon and, with a great view of the Tagus estuary, it is the nerve center of the city.

Next to the jetties on the Tagus, there is the commercial center, which is still called Palace Square (Terreiro do Paço), although the Royal Palace fell victim to the earthquake (1755). In the middle of the square sits King José I. On the north side impresses a monumental triumphal arch.

The Praça do Comércio (German place of trade) is one of the three most important places within the Baixa Pombalina, the inner city area of the Portuguese capital Lisbon, which was newly built due to the 1755 earthquake.
