The Great Bornhorster Lake is an excavated lake, the soil of which was removed for the construction of the nearby A29 motorway and the Hunte Bridge. The Lake Bornhorster is the largest lake in the urban area of Oldenburg and is the second largest lake in the Oldenburg region after the Zwischenahner Meer. It is around 1000 meters long and up to 700 meters wide. An almost 4km long bike path leads around the lake

The Great Bornhorster Lake is not a bathing lake, but is suitable for various leisure activities. The path around it is about four kilometers long. There is a boat dock on the Great Bornhorster Lake belonging to the "Verein der Segelfreunde Oldenburg-Bornhorst e.V. (VSOB)". The body of water is used by the Oldenburg Sports Fishing Association as a fishing water. In 2010, eels, perch, bream, pike, carp, roach, rudd, catfish and pike-perch were reported from the lake.
