The 16.7 m high tower was built in honor of the statesman Otto von Bismarck on the 83 m above sea level Mechtenberg. It is a pillar of fire without a lookout function. The 1.8 m diameter fire bowl on the top of the tower was operated by means of a pressure pump which pumps low-viscosity benzene residues through a two-millimeter thick pipe to a nozzle. On commemoration days, fire was supposed to burn on the tower, reminding of Bismarck's achievements. A total of 240 Bismarck towers were built, of which 174 have survived.

A landmark. From up here has a great view over parts of Bochum and food.
Essen RWE Tower, Bochum Lohrheide Station, Thyssen-Krupp, Zeche Holland, Arena Schalke and much more can be seen. The short but steep climb with cobblestones is not without. Careful, with wet weather danger of slipping !!
