As the oldest town in Prignitz, Lenzen looks back on over a thousand years of history. Slavs from the Linone tribe probably settled in the glacial valley of the Elbe in the 8th century. They built a ring-shaped fortification at the site of today's Lenzen Castle - Lunkini Castle.
The castle later came into the possession of the German noble family Edle Gans zu Putlitz. An early German castle was built on the Slavic castle wall. The castle tower that still exists today with its walls over three meters thick dates from this time in the 13th century.
